When did you stop feeding your infant jarred baby food? |
| |
| My daughter is 16 months and I still feed her quite a bit of jarred baby food. I do it because she doesnt have many teeth yet and she tends to swallow things whole instead of gumming them up first. Its also easier to give it to her then to have to grind and cut up regular food. I do give her easy-to-eat regular food as well, like cheese, granola bars, macaroni and cheese, veggie nuggets and so on. Her doctor acts like I shouldnt be giving her any canned food at all except when we are traveling. I dont really see what is wrong with it but I do feel guilty since its like this big no no. My daughter loves anything I give her, canned or not. Why is it bad to give your babies jarred baby food? When did you stop giving baby food to your kids and why? | | | | | |

| | I don't know that it is really "bad" like you say. I also think it depends on both you and your daughter. If she doesn't have alot of teeth I can understand. My daughter is only eating regular table foods now instead of jar food and has been for quite some time. She had alot of teeth and just wasn't really interested in baby food anymore. Occasionally though, when she is going through one of her stages of not eating much I will break out some infant oatmeal and stage 2 fruits or veggies so I know that she is getting some good nutrition. | | | | | | |

| | My daughter pretty much had enough teeth to eat small things by the time she was 14 months. She's eat those toddler meals, and stuff. babycenter.com has a great guide to what to feed your kids by age, and you can always ask your Dr :) | | | | | | |

| | DS has only eaten jarred stuff a few times. I found it easier to just toss stuff into the food processor for him. He's also got 16 teeth, so it's easier on him to eat regular stuff. Maybe your doctor doesn't want your DD to get in the habit of eating that stuff because it might be hard to break her of it? Or maybe she needs different nutritional values than babies need. Hard to tell. There's lots of things that she can eat though, just take the few seconds to chop it small. DS still ends up swallowing a lot of things pretty whole, so I don't think the teeth are a big deal yet. Good luck! | | | | | | |

| | Personally, I never gave any of my three jarred baby foods at all. From the time they were about a year old, they would get whatever we were eating, pureed in the blender, with very little seasoning. Breakfast was oatmeal, made with water or with breastmilk. Lunch was usually leftovers from dinner the night before, or some sort of soup. | | | | | | |

| | I never did buy baby food in jars except for prunes when needed. I lived in Penticton British Columbia and we had all the fruit we needed and I canned the fruit. We had one of those meat grinders, the kind that clamped on a table. If I cooked chicken, turkey or roast beef I would just put some in the meat grinder. I made all my own baby food. I decided to do this because when I was pregnant (70's) I heard a doctor talking to an official person from Gerber and he was telling this doctor that the jarred baby food is at least 90 % water. I thought if that's the case I'll make my own baby food and I did. Worked well. | | | | | | |

| | My baby doesn't like eat canned food because mostly they are too soft. My daughter of 13 months only have four teeths but she like to chew her food though she doesn't have many teeth to chew. I always show her how to eat, the mouth motion so she know that we have to chew our food. I have a sister in law whose son can't eat any hard food though he is 23months and have all of his teeth. He doesn't chew his food, only swallow. This is a big problem. So I don't think letting our babies to eat soft food is good. Besides to me it won't stimulate babies' teeth growth. One more thing, if babies can eat hard food like ours, it'll be easier for us parents to take them out with us because we don't have to worry about what kind of food to feed them. | | | | | | |

| | I think I stopped shortly after he turned a year. He wasn't very interested in it and he was always too hungry! My boy can eat! But I did give him the Gerber Graduates meals for quite a while and he loved those, that is until he wasn't getting enough there either! I don't know that there is anything wrong with giving them food in the jar, I just think Doctors want you to teach them how to eat solid foods, because they can get a bit more nutrition that way. | | | | | | |

| | I started feeding my 17 month old "soft" table foods when he was only a month old, and I did the same with my girls. Doctors opinions all vary on this. My cousins doctor told her no "adult" food until at least a year, my doc says if they can eat it feed it to them. My son has a full set of teeth and eats everything we do, but cut up into smaller bites. I honestly think we stopped buying baby food when he was 9 months old. It all depends on what you are comfortable with and what your daughter can handle. | | | | | | |

| | My son is 15 months old and i still give him jars of baby food as he does not have many teeth either. I give him a mixture of chewable food like braised lamb and vegetables and some custards and fruits and oatmeal. I give him bits of bread and the fruit sticks you can buy for babies so he learns to chew. The only thing is with the fruit sticks he bits them in half and tried to swallow it. He makes it stick the the roof of his mouth. I have tried to give him small bits at a time but he likes to hold the bar himself. They are very messy so i put him in a singlet and a bib as to not stain his clothes. But as a sugestion try and give her bits of bread and things she can chew on but make them small enough so she can swallow and not choke. I also do the chewing motion and my son copies off me so he chews his food before he swallows. Try that and that should gradualt teach her to chew before swallowing. As for it being wrong i honestly belive that its up to the parents if they feel it is time to get their child off the smooth foods when they feel their child is ready. There is no right or wrong. | | | | | | |

| | My daughter lost interest in baby food on her own when she was about 13 months old. She was more interested in eating what we were eating. I never gave her many stage 3 foods. She just pretty much went from stage 2 to normal food. She had 4 teeth when she stopped eating baby food (2 in the top and 2 in the bottom). If you are comfortable I would start just gradually giving her more normal foods. Just start slow and give her small bites that you know she can chew. She will let you know if she doesn't want it. I say just do things at your own pace and at your daughters pace. Don't let anyone pressure you into anything you're not comfortable with. | | | | | | |
