For the Love of Man

I've been reading "The Call of the Wild" over and over. The first time I read it, I cried a river. John Thornton is simply a lonely man in need of love which Buck the dog eagerly shares. Buck saved John from drowning, from the notorious drunk and brought glory and money to his master. It was a good start, but the ending deflated my hopes for a happy ending. John and his two partners struck the gold mine, but they got killed by the Indians. Buck was having some sort of a reunion with his own kind, and it was too late to save his beloved master. He killed the leader and warriors of the tribe, and there was nothing and no one holding him back from heeding the Call of the Wild. If you were the editor of the book, would you rather that John and his partners didn't die so they could enjoy the sweet and yellow fruit of their hard labor?
