Are you getting your 5 a day?  |

Our government healthy eating guidelines say we should have 5 oieces or portions of fruit and vegetables a day. We try to follow the guidelines but sometimes it isn't so easy. 2 portions of vegetables with dinner is enough with meat or fish and a carbohydrate and 2 pieces of fruit as snacks. But thats only 4. Unless we have salad in sandwiches at lunch,we dont reach the target. How do you manage to get 5 a day or dont you?

1. desertdarlene (5842) | 3 years ago | Oh yes, I get at least 5 vegetables and 5 fruits a day. They are the staples of my diet. I don't eat much meat and I get headaches from eating too much grain and dairy. So, I eat vegetables. In fact, in a few minutes, I'm going to have a large spinach salad.

I shall have to start making salads again.Today we had chicken stew which had broccolii,carrots and barley and potato. There is a large bowl of fruit to choose from too. You can only eat so much though before you feel full.

2. wachit14 (3236) | 3 years ago | I probably don't get five fruits and veggies a day like I should, but I do try to add them to a my meals as much as possible. I put fresh fruit on cereal in the morning and I have a side salad for lunch every day. I also try to have a one fruit snack or veggie snack with low-fat dip and I try to have a piece of fruit after dinner. Dinner I always serve a side salad and one cooked veggie.

3. Willowlady (8982) | 3 years ago | We balance what we can afford. Different times of the year allow us to eat better, more from the garden which it what we prefer. We do the best we can and combine things so that we can enjoy ourselves and feel our best. So some days at certain times of the year we do get that minimum and more and other times of the year we are lucky to get what we can to reach that.

I would spend most of my time in the produce section when grocery shopping, and make lots of smoothies at home--twice a day with primarily fruit and some greens like spinach, kale, or romaine lettuce for green smoothies.

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | How to you avoid getting scurvy? My kids used to bring friends home for tea and if they didn't eat vegetables I always told them about the old sailors who didn't have any fruit or vegetables, getting scurvy:)

8. mlgb_24 (454) | 3 years ago | a glass of juice is counted as 1. then you could have 4 more afterwards. vegetables could be easily mixed with some other food without alternating the taste. some people use a juice maker/smoothie maker for 5 portions of fruits/day. i tried the smoothie, and it's so cool!

mihimolly (4889) | 3 years ago | Whenever I buy juice nobody bothers to dilute it and it is gone in a day. Just cant afford to do that all the time. We might have a go at smoothies in the summer when there are berries in the garden though.
