Have you Ever Found a Lost Pet and been able to reunite it with it's Owner? |
| |
| Have you ever found a lost pet that belonged to someone else and were you successful in reuniting it with it's owner? A lot of hunters 'lose' their hunting dogs around where I live, and I've been able to reunite many of them with their owners, thanks to their dog tags. There have been some that I haven't been able to find owners. Several years ago, I was visiting in a hospital, when I heard a commotion and looked up to see Security Guards chasing a young yellow Lab through the hospital. They succeeded in catching him, and threw him outside (to my horror, as there was a busy highway outside.) I went out and talked to him (the Lab) and he followed me to my car and hopped into the front seat. I took him home. He had no Identification. I drove through the hospital neighborhood for a couple of weeks, looking for "Lost Dog" signs, but never saw any. I kept him for a few weeks, then gave him to my brother, who lived several states away. About three months later, I was driving through that neighborhood again, and I saw a "Lost Dog" sign with a photo of the yellow Lab I had. I talked with my brother about the situation, and he was in agreement with my opinion that we reunite the the dog with his owner. The family was very happy when they heard the news and got were reunited with their long lost friend. It was a great moment! Do you have any "Lost Pet" stories? I would love to hear them.

| | This is a great story, recycledgoth. I bet that the cat's mum and the cat herself were so excited to be reunited. That was great of you to make that call. I think that that cat must have come to your doorstep so that she could help it be reunited. | | | |

| | Years ago when we were all still kids a tame cockatiel flew into my mothers house. This little bird loved children. When my twin brothers were in the bath it sat on the taps. When they went to bed it sat on the headboard. At breakfast it would fly on someones shoulder and walk down to your hand and share a slice of toast. One evening at the shop we saw a sign 'lost cockatiel'. We returned the bird which made the owners very happy, but we missed him terribly. At least we did the right thing. If one of my animals goes missing I would hope he would be returned to me. | | | | | | |

| | Wow, what a neat bird, Kylalynn! I would have loved to have seen all those antics. I bet that you and your brothers were enthralled with that cockatiel, and I bet that it was a sad moment when you did return it to its original owners. I am impressed that you did return it. | | | |

| | My partner and i live across from a very small and modest wood. When we came home one night, after we went out, we saw this dog running around, without an owner. We just approached the dog and it was very friendly. He was obviously used to being petted as he didn't mind. We did notice that he was limping severely. We both love dogs and we wanted to help this poor animal. My partner stayed outside and i went upto our flat to call the police (in Belgium we don't have en equivalent of animal control that works at night). They said they would send a parole car, so I was relieved. I went outside to tell my partner, who seemed to have dissappeared. I started calling him and he came out, with this big smurk on his face. It seemed he had found the dogs owner, the guy went for a walk with his dog, like he did every night. As for the limping, the owner told him that his dog was 14 years old and that she was suffering from arthritis. Well although i was relieved i had to call the cops that they were not needed anymore. That was pretty embarassing :). All ion all a happy ending. | | | | | | |

| | That is a happy ending, nietske. I can see where you might have had a moment of embarassment at calling back the police, but I'm sure that was fine. Thanks for sharing this. :) | | | |

| | That was a wonderful story Transdisc! That family must have been so happy to reunited with thier pet. I also found a hunting dog while my husband and I were exploring the woods during deer season many years ago. She was just lying in the brush, next to the road with this pitiful look on her face. You could tell she had given up, I felt so bad for her. We stopped to talk to her and try to find out what was going on, she had a tab fastened to her orange collar, no phone number but name and CB channel. She was emaciated, bones sticking out and she was so dehydrated that she could barely blink her eyes. We happened to have some Gatorade with us so we gave her all that she could drink and then loaded her up in the truck. We drove to the nearest fast food joint and bought her a hamburger and then took her home. We got in contact with my husband's brother, who knew just about everybody in the hunting circles there, and he contacted the guy through the CB. We brought the dog back to the woods a couple of weeks later to be reunited with her owner. She was very happy to see him but I was sad to see her go. | | | | | | |

| | What a wonderful story, kakemafarm. I have done similar things myself, and some of the animals have not recovered. It's just awful to find them so emaciated and giving up. I see them all the time around here, and it's so sad. I'll see a tired, starving dog on the side of the road, and when I drive by, they seem so hopeful that I am their master. I'm so glad that you had a good experience where the animals was actually saved. I hope that the owner took better care of it. Thanks for sharing. :) | | | |

| | I just remembered another story. A family member of mine found a dog in her new neighborhood and brought it in. The dog had a collar and tags with a phone number. But because she liked the dog and it was small like she wanted, she didn't call the owners to let them know she had found the dog. When I came over that evening I asked her if she had called and she lied to me and said she did but nobody was there and that she left a message. I got the number off of the tag and called them myself later that night and the lady was so excited, she was crying on the phone because she missed her pet so much. My aunt was really mad at me for what I did but I didn't care, if that had been my dog, I would have wanted it back, not to wonder forever what happened to it. | | | | | | |

| | Yikes! I bet your family member was mad at you, but probably more mad at herself and your actions agitated her actions. I'm like you -- I would want my animal returned to me as well, and I can't imagine keeping someone's animal from them if I could help it. | | | |

| | Another happy ending! About a month ago, I found a little dog wandering near a public pool, shivering because he'd gone for a swim. It was unseasonably warm but not warm enough to be outside soaking wet. (I started a discussion on myLot and asked what to do.) I went back a few times to where I'd found him, and on the fifth day I saw a sign on a telephone pole with his picture and a phone number. His owner came to get him after I called, and I'm not sure which of them was more excited. | | | | | | |

| | This is a happy ending, perrygunight! It was good of you to hold on to the little guy for a few days, and not to give up hope at finding the owner. I think that many people think it's sad to see a lost pet, but they don't do anything about it. | | | |

| | We had a dog show up at our house that was very friendly :) His name was Leo. It was hard to read his name tag due to how it was printed, the coloring on it. He was also deaf. It was on his tag thankfully. We called his owners but they weren't home so we left a message. That night when she got off work at 11pm she called us. She was so relieved to have him back. He'd skipped out on her and under the fence. She was very worried since he couldn't hear and of course could be hurt easier since he wouldn't hear a car. He's shown up a couple of more times since but he does a bee line right for our house when he gets out so she knows where to look. | | | | | | |

| | Ha! It looks like Leo found a new friend, emeraldisle. By any chance, do you give him any treats when he stops by now? I used to have some neighbors who had three dogs -- a Mastif, an Irish Wolfhound, and a Scottish Terrier. About every other day they would stop by my house for dog treat. I could see two of them looking in the door window, waiting patiently (usually when we were eating the evening meal) and I would take them the treat. I miss those guys. Thanks for sharing this great story, emeraldisle. :) | | | |

| | We've tried giving him treats but he doesn't like them :( at least not the ones we had. He just likes a lot of attention. Right now the owner has her mother staying with her but when she isn't she hires my neice to come and play with him and take him for a walk while the owner is at work. This seems to keep him from digging under the fence to go out and find attention. | | | |

| | Wow, what a story. I wonder if your brother had become attached to the dog. He must be a wonderful person to help you reunite the dog with its original owners. | | | | | | |

| | Excellent point, buldwgz. I don't know what I would have done it my brother hadn't agreed to reunite the dog. That's why I called him first, before contacting the owner -- I wanted to respect his attachment to the dog, and I also trusted that he would do the right thing, as he's a dog lover and a fantastic person. Thanks for your comments. | | | |
