Please go through the website journey through timeless India, an autobiography by Nancy Chapman. It is a big travelgogue, you can read it freely online.

Problem is that India is the most diverse country in the world. You find sorrow and you find happiness. It's a land of contrast and paradoxes and miseries and magic.
It's diversity is appealing. People of all kind, old historical cities to cities with the best skyline in Asia. Everything. Rude people to the most helpful people. You will find everything in India.
I hope you have fun in India. Cause i would never miss a chance to live in India.

India is a land with a rich and varied history.
The number system was invented by India. Aryabhatta was the scientist who invented the digit zero. Chess was invented in India. Sanskrit is considered as the mother of all higher languages. The' place value system' and the 'decimal system' were developed in 100 BC in India. The World's first university was established in Takshila in 700 BC. Ayurveda is the earliest school of medicine known to mankind. The father of medicine, Charaka, consolidated Ayurveda 2500 years ago. India is.......the Largest democracy in the world.
The World's First Granite Temple is the Brihadeswara temple at Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu. Until 1896, India was the only source for diamonds to the world.

I'd like very much to visit India, it's a very charming country with an interisting culture. India is the biggest democracy in the world and it's a very spiritual place, it's a country full of contradictions, and yet it has a very ancient history and you can see a lot of art.

I went to New Delhi India for the first time in 2002 in the summer (April). A big mistake since the weather was so hot. Coming from a tropical country myself, I still found India extremely hot at that time and traveling was difficult. Nevertheless, I still found time to explore some of the sights - Taj Mahal in Agra for one is truly a must see place which is about 4 hrs by bus from New Delhi (north India). If you are open to new experiences, I think India can be a character-building trip. It's a bit chaotic initially, being surrounded by all the exotic smells and women wearing their colorful and traditional sarees. Food, silver and Gold Jewelry as well and cotton clothing are quite cheap. If you decide to explore the markets and streets, you have to learn to haggle since the prices are not fixed. I think haggling is part of their way of life and so they might come across intimidating when you talk to them. But I realized eventually that it was really how they normally talk - very assertive and quite loud. Be careful of street food since its really not that safe. They also have airconditioned department stores and lots of fast foods restaurants like pizza hut, Mcdonalds, Dominoes. However since most of the Indians in the North (like New Delhi) are Hindus, they are strictly vegetarian and McDonalds serve veggie burgers. The cows are considered sacred and so they definitely don't eat beef. The Moslems on the other hand don't eat pork so its hard to find pork in the area as well. If you go to Southern India, that's where most of the beaches are and they have a bigger number of Christians. Also since its near the seas, they have seafood as part of their daily staple as well.
I stayed in New Delhi for three weeks and was able to visit old palaces, and old forts, the tomb of Mahatma Gandhi (and other tombs)as well as temples. They also have free cultural shows in the evenings which was my favorite part since the Indian dances are truly amazing and you also get to understand part of their culture since most of their dances are adapted from Indian myths. Free concerts, theater, musical programs are regularly listed in major newspapers.
There were lots of wild birds (parrots) in the park since Hindus generally have a high respect for all living things and so it was a refreshing change to see these colorful birds of various types in tress in the city park. I got my full hand henna tatoos (the designs are so intricate) in a park for just 10 rupees (about 20 cents) but of course, you need to haggle.
From New Delhi you can also go to Nepal (1 hr) flight or 24 hrs by bus. I was planning to go to Nepal and had my visa approved in New Delhi but changed my mind last minute. I think its not advisable to go there now because of Nepal's insurgency problems.
If you do decide to go, just remember to coordinate with government approved tour agencies and BE ASSERTIVE. Traveling by public transportation might be stressful because most are not air-conditioned and its very crowded. Also you can get groped. If you take the auto-rickshaw (its like the tuktuk of Bangkok), you might encounter drivers who would tend to charge you higher. Just make sure you tell them to use the meter and they have normally a chart to show how much it would cost to travel from one point to another. Never ride without being sure that the driver understood your destination and would use the meter.
Best transportation I think is the Metrorail in Delhi/Calcutta but I didn't experience it since it was still under construction when I went there.
Hope this helps
Denjie
