Have you guys seen this article? I thought that most medical centers had systems in place to double check that operations were performed on the proper parts of the body after similar mistakes!!! It's on CNN.com, I don't yet have enough postings to cut and paste it...a gentleman went to the VA Hospital in LA to have a testicle removed for possible cancer...but they removed his other testicle, the perfectly healthy one, instead!!!

First of all, having had a husband in the military, I can tell you that VA hospitals can leave a lot to be desired. Second, this guy even played a major part in the error! According to the news, he never read his surgical consent form...just signed it! He didn't want to put his glasses on. The consent form had the wrong testicle written down for removal. This guy was every bit as guilty over this incident as the hospital staff.

Never, ever sign a consent form without reading it. If you are having surgery on a specific side and the doctor doesn't mark it, you get a magic marker and mark it yourself. When my son had his foot operated on, the doctor gave him a magic marker and told him to mark the correct foot. The consent form was filled out based on the foot my son marked. My son then read and signed the consent.

As I go back and review the story, it makes no mention of the fact that the veteran did not review the consent form. That is unwise in my opinion. I work in a VA...I believe sometimes that the VA system gets a bad rap...I have seen more and more where the rating of health care has gone up. But I also know that a lot of that depends on the individual facility. There is more than one in my area and I know that the veterans in this region have a preference as to which facility that they go through. I feel bad for this guy, but I will say that my opinion of this story has changed knowing that he didn't make any attempt to insure proper care of himself. I bet he will think about that next time he doesn't feel like putting his glasses on!

Definitely! It's one thing not to read the fine print on your credit card agreement; but not to read a consent form for having part of your body removed... that's just crazy! If I were to have surgery I'd go over that form very closely and ask questions about anything that I didn't understand.
