Which series of US space missions preceded the Apollo moon series  

If you're talking about manned missions, that would be the Gemini series. Originally designated Mercury Mark 2, it followed on from the Mercury missions and was intended to develop the techniques that would be necessary for Apollo's success (rendezvous and docking, long duration missions, EVA etc). Each Gemini capsule carried two men, and there were a total of ten manned missions.
