"When the wind blows the cradle will rock & down will come baby, cradle and all. |
|
A lullaby straight out of a children's nursery rhymes book.
"Rock-a-bye baby on the tree top, when the wind blows the cradle will rock, when the bough breaks the cradle will fall, down will come baby, cradle and all."
WHAT?? That sounds rather violent, doesn't it? Poor baby!!
and such a lovely melody and not only for singing baby to sleep but for a little music box when you open it, or a little ballerina that will turn on its base if your wind it up.
And what about poor little Miss Muffet!! You know THAT one.. a spiderto scare her!! POOR CHILD!!
Why have we been exposing our little kids to this for years and years.. is there a rhyme or reason to this? (pun intended, LOL)

1. elp388 (1847) | 3 years ago | LOL! well if the singing doesn't work then throwing the child out of the tree will make him/her go to sleep! LOL! I used to think the same thing about those old lullaby's! they sounded so cruel! way back when, (listening to old stories) it did seem that parents were crueler and children were treated much differently.. some people treated their children like a farm hand or a maid. there was also an old saying that I hated... "children are to be seen .. not heard" that one always got to me! LOL!

2. cloudwatcher (3239) | 3 years ago | We have often discussed the violence in children's nursery rhymes and fairy stories.
It really is difficult to find ones that DON'T contain violence, although some of them have happy endings. We think of Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks, Sleeping Beauty, Babes in the Woods - and so many more, and then the "nursery"(?) rhymes like Jack and Jill, Humpty Dumpty etc
I think of "Ring a ring of rosies" where children drop dead at the end. When we think of the origin of this, we wonder how children can sing it. It supposedly came from the black death plague in London. A sneeze was the sign that another one had caught the plague and would soon be dead. This gave way to "A tissue, a tissue, we all fall down" as well as saying "God bless you" after a sneeze.
Personally, I never used most of the nursery rhymes, but I certainly read to my children and encouraged a love of reading and a yearning for learning in them.

fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | Probably a darn good thing you didn't read the nursery rhymes. Your kids would have been smart enough to question you probably and then you would likely have felt a little silly after the explanation, that you were even reading these in the first place, then. LOL.. maybe? I actually preferred little stories like 'The Little Engine That Could'.. I was inspired!

4. liranlgo (2887) | 3 years ago | What a wonderful idea for a post, fjaril. I really think that most of the children's song's, are not realy targeted to children, but to us, the adults. Children at the stage that they are at the cradle, are usually listening to the melody and not to the word's meaning. But the adults do. Do you remember the book, 'the little prince', for years people taught it was intendent for young children, and some people still think of it that way. But no. It is for adults. I think that the person who wrote this nursery rhyme, did write about his greatest fear, and that is: what would happen to my baby in this cruel world. If you will check most of the songs, that were written to babies, you will find out the same routine of fear in each one of them. Maybe the intention of the mother in this song, was to get her child ready to this reality, we all live in. Did you think of that?

fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | hmmmm..Maybe. I have such a limited imagination of how they thought in 'those days' . It SOUNDS plausable though, and if YOU are going in that direction, hej, I am not staying behind!!
How was your celebrations? did you wear white??

liranlgo (2887) | 3 years ago | the celebrations were graet and yes i had wore white, till my mother broke her leg, from that point, things has got a bit complicated.

6. AdTe23 (1701) | 3 years ago | I know what you mean. I have sang this song to my son a few times, but I don't do it often, because I think it sounds violent. It's just like "ring around the rosey". It's about the black plague. Why would we want our children singing about the black plague while they play with their friends? Sounds rather depressing. Children are supposed to have fun and play, not worry about death or dying.

fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | and yet.... they are still quite popular.. funny, agreat movie like 'Gone with the Wind' has been retired, and is gone with the wind.. When are we doing that with these nursery rhymes then?
| |
|
|
cloudwatcher (3239) | 3 years ago | Because they are not politically incorrect. Now Enid Blyton, on the other hand, had a golliwog, so she was politically incorrect and was banned.

fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | an innocent character becoming a symbol of racism, is what you are referring to, isn't it.
Yes.. I understand how it would have become that. I also understand that it is. We have had to change certain very good pastries because the name could be offensive if one were to take it that way, one day, some day. and yet, there are efforts underway to stop some people who would be offended from offending each other.
Gee.. it isn't easy to write a reply when you cannot use any real words in case you offend someone or even could offend in some future time or it is suggestive of being offensive or possibly provocative to inviting offensive behaviour!
Sooo, my friend, how was your night? sleep well, did you? (smile)

8. lloydanthony111 (1178) | 3 years ago | Please don't get politically correct on me and move to ban lullabys and nursery rhymes.
I heard them all while growing up and they never had any affect on me. No nightmares or anything.
As a matter of fact, my favorite one is ole Humpty Dumpty and Jack & Jill. And you know what happened to both of them. lol

lloydanthony111 (1178) | 3 years ago | Here's some the soothing lyrics.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall. Humpty Dumpty had a great fall. All the king's horses and all the king's men Couldn't put Humpty together again
Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after.
Aren't they just lovely? lol

9. camar_lyn (649) | 3 years ago | Hi fjaril, i've always wondered why nursery rhymes are written as such. Even when i was younger literally*wink* The irony of it all is that it's written specially for the children! Do we even have nursery rhymes that involves helping people, our parents, filial piety, you know where i'm headin to?
Having said that, i would want my kids to know their nursery rhymes and as many as i can remember as possible. The reason? Well, it exposes the child to the english language, the sentence structure as well as the vocabulary even before the child goes to school. And the great thing about it is, all parents can do it. No special training needed.:) - Lyn

fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | smart idea!! there are great children's books also that have nice lessons for kids.. like,'the little engine that could!'
but here is a cuter nursery rhyme:
Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle, The cow jumped over the moon. The little dog laughed to see such fun And the dish ran away with the spoon!
no violence, no political incorrectness! Perfect! (;=)
| |
|
|
camar_lyn (649) | 3 years ago | Perfect eh? Waiting for you to have your own grandkids. Then you tell me if it's perfect. ehhehehe They'll be asking you... 'Gramps, why is the fiddle the cat's favorite instrument? why did the dish ran away with the spoon? Why did the cow jump over the moon? What sport is the dog laughing at? ' what will dear grandpa say?*wink* - Lyn

10. Firewinddancer (265) | 3 years ago | To me this is symbolic of harsh changes that can happen in life. The wind can be gentle one mimute and a storm can whip up bringing in danger. With Miss Muffet, not everythng will stay the same something can cause you to lose everything by your reactions.
| |
| |
|
|
fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | I think you hit it dead on. It IS symbolic in all likelyhood, exactly meaning like you say, but kinda scarey for little kids, don't you think? or?
| |
|
|
Firewinddancer (265) | 3 years ago | Yes it might be consider to be scary for little ones, but the wee ones of long ago learnt many a thing sitting near mother's bended knee. Ago old sayings were handed down through word of mouth or written works. Listen my children of the story of....

fjaril (4136) | 3 years ago | I want to say that it was hard in those days, but I suppose it is all relative. It may be pretty hard for some people in this day and age too and their children learn how to fend and protect themsleves and KNOW that life is ever chaninging and tough too. Thanx for your input here. Nice to meet you!
