Why does the NATIONAL GUARD get sent to another country?

Isn't the National Guard meant to be for use in the United States? Aren't they here to protect the states? Aren't they here for emergencies in the states? Why, then, do they get shipped off to fight in areas of the world that are not the United States??

Thats why they send over their in other country so we have alert or spy in case the other side wants to attack here in u.s.a. maybe thats a porpuse and help to protect the other innocent people.
