Why is it bad luck to kill a spider?r |
|
Okay this might be a silly thing to ask...but this was a saying my great-grandmother used to say...that it was bad luck to kill a spider..Now I can understand why that might be a belief in certain Native American cultures, such as the Navajo..but my great-grandmother wasn't..Navajo that is...but of Celtic (Irish) blood. So I was wondering...have you ever heard this saying..I'm curious as to how many other cultures might have that belief..and to this day, thank goodness I'M NOT scared of spiders, and you might think this odd I me...but if I do see one..I don't kill it...like just now...I saw one in my kitchen..scooped it into a cup and put it into one of my flower pots!! Just curious folks...if you ever heard this old wives tale kind of thing

2. zenmachado (1106) | 3 years ago | Its also bad luck in the south. Like in New Orleans. They say that you get seven years bad luck, if you intentionaly kill a spider.. altought they actually use the word murder. There is also a supersticion that if someone is sweeping, and they hit you with the broom, you get bad luck.. or something really horrible will occur to you.

3. DarlingGirl (588) | 3 years ago | Actually, it's big in my family, and we're mostly Irish and English. The saying is that the spider in the corner should not be killed because it will draw money to the house. Why? I think it has something to do with spider webs, nets, and catching things. Indians make dream-catchers to snare in nightmares, so why not spiders to catch money?
All I know is, killing a spider never did my household any good, or bad, except there were always more bugs (mosquitoes) if there were no spiders.
I'll tell you a funny but tragic story - I had a spider living in my bedroom around the time that I read "Charlotte's Web". So I let her live there, and she made an egg sack. I didn't think anything of it. Then one day I got home from school to find a BILLION little tiny white baby spiders parachuting all over my room! Well, you can guess that I couldn't have that, and I spent all afternoon hunting them down and smooshing them. I felt very guilty. But what can you do? Heh. So let them live in, but as soon as that egg sack appears, scoop her and her eggs up and out in the garden they should go!!!!!!

Actually I did get the good news that I sold my first item on-line today through http://www.Etsy.com I was so surprised cause I only just joined that site to start selling my crafts the other day! And I love that story Charlotte's Web--cried when she died (in the movie version anyway)

4. brokentia (7815) | 3 years ago | Well lookie that! You scooped it up and put it in your flower pot? Good for you! I can not say that I am the same. I do not like spiders. I AM scared of them. Even though I know they are also living creatures and are scared too. I just can't help it. And they seem to be attracted to me because when one is around...they chase me! OK, they don't truly chase me...they just seem to run towards me!
But to answer your question as to why spiders are bad luck.... Honestly! Because they break your toe! Really! Last spring there was a spider in my kitchen. It was right before spring break started so now boys were in the house to take the spider outside for me. So I was stuck...fight or flight. I chose to fight. And yes, I am sorry, I killed the spider. Bad me! LOL Well, only a few hours later...at the same baseboard that I killed the spider, I hit my foot on it and broke my little toe! Oh my! I had never broken a toe before. And talk about not being able to speak! Well, of course the first thing I thought of, This was my karma for killing the helpless spider. LOL *sigh* To this day it hurts to bend that toe completely. So when you ask if it is bad luck to kill a spider? Yup! Sure is!!! You break a toe!

5. ElicBxn (15095) | 3 years ago | never heard it, and, while I'm not from an intensely Celtic background, I did have a great grandmother from Ireland. (Had more of a Germanic influence from my mom's mother's side.)
I don't like to kill spiders, after all, they eat bugs & any bug eater is a friend, right? But I do think they belong outside. If they stay out of my way I leave them alone, at least until they get too big.

6. zukepr (11799) | 3 years ago | I have never heard this one! I would think that the only bad luck to come would be the spiders! LOL Dont get me wrong I love all creatures and nature and I respect spiders for the job they do BUT when they are in my house they are trespassers!!!! ALL trespassers in MY house would be killed on sight!

pyewacket (11569) | 3 years ago | Tsk tsk, naughty girl...I don't have any qualms about killing other buggies like cockroaches or waterbugs--ugh!! But spiders...nope, just can't..and don't laugh..okay, maybe you can..but if I do actually kill a spider I feel bad and apologize...maybe that's the Native American part of me...we just apologize for killing a living creature.

brokentia (7815) | 3 years ago | Hey! I apologized too when I killed my spider...but I still broke my toe! LOL

7. hey_baby (382) | 3 years ago | oh my!
i have never heard of this. i totally hate spiders! even those baby spiders. i don't hurt them, i ask somebody else to squash them for me.
everytime a see a spider, i would scream myself to death.
once i slept at a relatives house, i saw this huge spider with very long legs, fat body and i think its pregnant because i saw something with on its belly.
it crawled fast, it was gone before i even had the chance to wake my brother up. i wasn't able to go to sleep. i had my brother hunt it up for like 2 hours.
but i still believe that my bad luck is because of the dumb decisions i make in my life.

9. scarlet_woman (8800) | 3 years ago | my grandmother was native/irish. she always said it was bad luck because spiders bring luck into a household and weaved the family together.to kill one meant disruption and fighting.
