Artists look at the world in a new way. Their work can be funny or sad, beautiful or disturbing, real-looking or strange.

Throughout history, artists have painted pictures of nature (called landscapes), pictures of people (called portraits), and pictures of flowers in vases, food and other objects (known as still files). Today many artists create pictures that do not look like anything in the real world. These are examples of abstract art, or modern art.

Photography, too, may be a form of art. Photos record both the commonplace and the exotic, and help us look at events in new ways.

Sculpture is a three-dimensional form made from clay, stone, metal, or other material. They can be large, like the Statue of Liberty, or small. Some are real looking. Others have no form you can recognize.

I like all kinds of artwork. Lately I've been more into sculpture and ceramics. My boyfriend is a sculpter, so he's opened me up to quite a bit. He works with clay as well, so I've spent a lot of time in the ceramics studio--so I've been able to observe a lot of those artists working with clay.

I don't really seem to have a preference when it comes to realistic or abstract, but I probably am drawn a bit more to the abstract. I like things that hold my interest and engage thought. However, I also just like to admire nicely made and decorated pots, etc.
