Books are the building blocks of Civilization!! Thoughts to ponder!!  

I like that you said that books are important. I have come across discussions on this site that talk about books (and reading) being bad or not necessary. I don't know what's going on with people and reading nowadays. I work for the library and all kids want to do now is play on the computer. I hardly ever see a kid wanting to check out books anymore, especially for fun. Well, the really small kids still seem to love them. When they get older, they go right to the computers.

Louis L'Amour is one of my favorite authors. I love his westerns. They are so life-like, that I can picture every scene and the characters and their surroundings. He was a fantastic and extremely talented writer, and not just westerns. If you love to read, his books are well worth reading. He had the right idea, go find out for yourself...that is true living.

L'Amour did most of his own research for all of his books and the help he received was from his daughter and son.He built his stories of fiction around facts.But we as a society seem to believe written stories more than stories handed down from generation to generation.Many people look at the Indian stories as legends or as made up as an example.L'Amour wrote about some of these legends in hist westerns to try to keep them alive.

This is true. I loved reading Louis L"Amour's books my mom brought me a big box of them once and I read all of them and enjoyed them alot but when I was gone visiting family for 2 weeks he throwed them away because he knew I read them all but I wanted to keep them. Louis was a very insiteful writer he knew what to write to keep people interested in his books. I am thanksful that people are getting more and more interested in getting a decent education nowdays instead of blowing their future. My mother in law didn't know how to read and she would get so mad because I would read I tried to teach but she'd get mad at me so I gave up so she died not knowing how to read. I know quite a few others who don't know how to read and they are tooken advantage of all the time by people who can read. I should go to the lbrary check this book out because it does sound interesting and I am sure I will enjoy it.. thanks..

I too love to read and read all kinds of books. I was in Lawrence Kansas several years ago and my daughter and I went to a mall - and being my usual self I could not pass up the books store. They had a thing going on books were either $2.50 each or 5 for $10. I had 4 books in my hand when my daughter said "Hurry up Mom." I saw this book called "Waltzing with a Dictator" & just grabbed it. When I read it I found out it was about Ferdinand & Imelda Marcos - and how they became millionaires bu plundering money given by the USA to help the poor people in the Phillipines. It was a real eye-opener and one of the best books I had read in a long time.

I think he is right too. Books are the building blocks of civilization. They are a very good way to share information. It is a great way to take part in another persons innermost feelings - often easier written than said out loud.

reading books are a good source of knowledge. It improves ur vocabulary and helps u read faster. It is also a good time pass rather than watching TV. I would suggest kids to read more and more books. there are so many books that are so intresting tat u cant keep it down without finishing. So parents can encourage kids to read books...

it is funny but true , People take so much for granted in this life , My hubby and my sons are really intelligent people and I put it down to the simple fact that they are all readers , my hubby buys books every week , he gets them in presents for all special occasions birthdays , fathers day , Christmas , he reads every afternoon and every night , AS you say where would we be without books ? that would mean I couldn't be on my lovely My Lot site , doesn't bare thinking about lol , thanks pal xx good discussion xx

I Love Louis Amoroes books thougtht I had read all this one must be a non- fiction book
Altho his westerns are so good and I go to map and find where he is writing about makes me want to go to these places to see.
and your right with out being able to read and write makes a person loose out on so much!
I have 5 kids and only one really reads books!
My dad had a collection of his books I have now past them on to the son that reads.
I also love the movies that were made for his books!

I haven't actually read any of his books. Anyway, I guess we'd be back in the caveman days if none of us knew how to read or write, but only because even back then they knew how to write and read, even if it was only drawings on walls. That just progressed into writing. Eventually, things will evolve, so even if we went back to caveman days eventually we'd figure out a reading/writing system.

Plus, it was Plato or someone (probably not Plato, actually) who was scared that the advent of writing would lead to the decline of memory...
