Do you wash your lawnmower after using it?

I was wondering just how many do clean their mowing equiptment after using it? I used to all the time, my hubby said it would prolong the machine. But honestly maybe I'm just getting older, but by the time I mow these 2 acres, some is push mowed some is with the riding mower, I am too worn out to mess with rinsing or washing them off. How often should it be done?

That's a good one lightning! My hubby works long hours and long work weeks, so it would have to be me to do the cleaning. He does the repairs though when I break something, he's really good to do that.

I must admit I dont clean my mower off properly. I tend to shake off any loose grass and if I can be bothered I will get a stick and unlodge the grass underneath from around the blades.
I have never cleaned it properly and it is over 20 years old so I dont think cleaning it makes much difference as it cuts just as well now as it did when it was new.

You sound like me with the stick :) I'm always afraid to put my hand under there, maybe a snake or something. Wow! 20 years is a long time for a mower to keep on running. It must be a good one. What brand is it? Thanks for sharing with me.

I don't mow, as we have no grass. But if I did own one and mowed, yes, I would clean it as needed. If it is getting a bit much, perhaps you can hire a kid to do it, or someone to clean it for you sugar.

Used to you could hire a kid to mow your grass pretty reasonable. Now to get someone, anyone to cut my mom's yard and it is not a large one, only an average lot in a subdivision, it would be at the very least, $40. I have about 2 acres to mow, so I really couldn't afford it. We tease a lot about someday moving and getting a place with no grass. I wouldn't mind a smaller yard, but we are about to get more acreage, so I guess he will have to buy a tractor too. Don't look for me to get on the tractor though :)

I have never washed the lawn mower. We have always had a push mower. After using that, there is no strength to wash it.

I can relate to this one very well. I agree 100% with you, by the time you finish mowing, you hardly have enough strength to get back into the house let alone wash a push mower :)

Since you mow so much I would recommend cleaning under the mowers. It is a lot easier to clean fresh than dry. The mower will not cut right with that stuff built up in there. Your engine will also work harder therefore you will not get as much use out of it.
We bought a riding lawn mower last fall and it has already paid for itself. I might keep the blades sharp and use it until it quits. LOL. I work long days and I want to relax when I get home not fool with the equipment.
I weed eat the edges of a lot of flower beds and I have to clean it at the end of the day or it will not cut right and there is more friction as well.

My husband is very good to keep the blades in check and the oil, etc. He tells me to try to clean under it also b/c of the same reason. He says it strains the motor and other parts if I have a lot of buildup underneath it. But it's hard to clean under it, I wish I had one of those garage lifts like at the service station.

I have a fair size garden which I mow weekly. It takes me an hour to do it all. I don't use a rider mower. I haven't washed or cleaned my mower since buying it and have used it for nearly 3 years now. I bought it cheap so I guess I can easily replace it if and when it goes wrong. I haven't really noticed any decrease in efficiency.

Thank you for sharing this with me. I don't usually wash my push mower either, once in a great while I will, usually just a rinse off. No strength after mowing to do much cleaning. Some people thoroughly wash their mowers though.

We have to use a riding mower. I have both a push and a riding mower and use them both all the time. I have had to resort to just the push mower when the rider was broke or in the shop. But it nearly does me in.

I admit, I don't always clean my mower after using it, for the same reason as you - by the time I'm done mowing I'm just too tired. I do however try to do it every time and try teaching the kids to do the same when they mow.
I have heard it is better for the life of the mower - keeping it clean delays rusting and such. My main reason though is because when the junk gets built up the mower doesn't cut as good and it's easier to clean it off when it's fresh rather than having to do it the next time I mow and it's all dried and hard underneath.

Sometimes I can't get under the deck good enough. I wish I had a way to prop it up so I could see under there. I have to use my hands sometimes to scoop out built up grass and dirt. We live in the country and it's not all grass that gets mowed, it's weeds, etc. So I'm also afraid of grabbing a snake too!
