Can anyone tell me i it's possible to raise lemon trees from the seeds? I have had plants grown to a certain height and then they die.
Would these little trees eventually flower and fruit?
I have seen small but fruiting trees in the garden centres but they are veryt expensive and look like a graft off an old tree.
Can anyone give advicve?

They sell grafted treet in plant centers because it will give fruits early than those from seeds. You can grow plants from seed but you have to know some facts about that tree. If there is a need to join 3 plants from seeds so that it will withstand weather and other conditions, do it. Others grafted plants from seed and grafted plant so that it will be a strong plant.

I had no idea that we could raise citrus trees in our colder climate! I think I'll be saving up my seeds!

Yes there is possibility of growing lemon trees from the seeds? But it takes too many time almost 10 years. besides if it is a seed of hybrid then you cannot be sure about fruits.

No offense but it doesn't take 10 years. My uncle throws seeds into pots all of the time and they are about 3 feet tall and have fruit. I know they are not 10 years old.

He has limes, oranges and lemons that he grew from seeds he just put in a pot. One time he had a tree with 1 orange on it and it looked like the Christmas tree on the Charlie Brown special. LOL

I got a nice purple leaf peach from him that I have been bonsai-ing for the past 5 years I might give to him for Christmas one of these days. I think he will get a kick out of it. It isn't much taller than when I got it from him but the trunk is much thicker and it is starting to look like a little tree.

Sorry to say this but the best bet is to buy a grafted tree ... although more expensive they are also the best ones to get. We have a small organic farmlet and when we were setting down the trees we needed, the first year we put some seeds in pots to see how they would go. Three years later, due to demand, we bought some grafted trees .... they are now producing but those from seed are not doing so well. Fruit planted from seeds aren't always the best and often do not taste like the original.

We have had much more success with grafted trees .... they can still be young and produce within a year although good crops do not come for a few years. They are well worth the extra money ... either buy the grafted tree and have lemons in a couple of years or else spend the money buying lemons instead.

Lemons will usually come true to type from seed but the type on its own stock may not be as vigorous or fruitful as when grafted onto an appropriate stock. It is always worth planting the pips of any lemons which you particularly liked for their flavour or thinness of skin or juicyness, even if you don't know the name of the variety. If you can get lemons from Sicily, they are reputed to be among the best!

Oranges rarely come true to type from seed and the seedling will usually have reverted to a wild and bitter variety but, very occasionally, one may see TWO shoots from one seed. If you see this, very carefully take the plantlets from the compost and you will see that one is growing from the seed itself while the other has sprouted from the skin of the seed. This is the one you want to keep, since it is a clone of the original tree, just as a cutting would be. Discard the proper seedling and repot the clone. As with most fruit, it will probably be a more successful tree if grafted onto a suitable stock. Grow it on until it is a year old and then graft it.

Thanks for the advice, I have the pots and seeds in my new greenhouse where they seem to like the warmth! I'll keep my eyes open for the double sprouters!

Forgive my ignorance, but what do you mean by 'grafting' a seedling/sapling onto an established tree?

The only grafting I've heard of is when you wrap a bag of compost around a branch to stimulate root growth, then take it as a cutting.
