There aren't many movies that show witchcraft or magic in a more positive vien, that is not the negative stuff that most people associate with witchcraft like black magic and satanism--it's unfortunate too, but then I guess as far as genre evil sells better for movies...there are only a handful of movies that show witchcraft or magical principles in a slightly more positive aspect...the one that comes to my mind the most is Practical Magic...The Craft was good up to a point until the three four girls in it turned theri power into evil (typical)--the mini-series, Mists Of Avalon was excellent--you got a real sense of pagan ideologies So what are your favorite movies that show witchcraft or magic in more positive content

Well...maybe Lord of the Rings or even Chronicles of Narnia are "witchcraft" per se but they are magical--remember..Alsan became alive again after his sacrifice because of the "deep magic"

Halloweentown is a great one, I agree! I like Practical Magic, although it's not very realistic at all. The Craft is fun, but again, it's negative. The leader (I forget her name but I love the actress) becomes involved in witchcraft and ends up in the looney bin - not very positive now, is it? Narnia is a Christian movie - the Lion is the King (the Christian God). The author himself was very religious and wrote the story based on Christian beliefs and teachings.

it's true that Narnia was directly based on the story of Jesus, but it could be perceived as telling the story of any dying and resurrecting Solar God, I mean look at it, when he returns, winter comes to an end.

this is more a Pagan thing, and a lot of people will throw their hands up in horror at me suggesting it's at all positive. The Wicker Man. the original, of course. as you watch it, the Pagan community come across as being so much more reasonable and happy and likeable than the rather narrow minded, pompous, bigoted Christian policeman. they're a real community. I also really like Practical Magic, Chocolat (the book had far more Pagan overtones, which were only touched on a little in the film) Bedknobs & Broomsticks was fun (my neice was watching it, and announcing to the whole room "Auntie Sheena can do THAT!" I think things are getting better on that front.

I loved The Wicker Man remake. I still haven't gotten around to see the original although we do have it too. I loved it! I wanted to move to Summer's Isle - well aside from some of their strange 'ways' anyway LOL.

I'll have to read that book, Chocolat--just thought of another that is at least on a more positive note --who can forget Bell. Book, and Candle--and of course since my user name on most places is Pyewacket..where do you think I got the name, not only for me but for my real life black cat--although the name actually goes back to Medieval England

I liked The Craft. Even though the three girls turned against the new girl and the new girl even played a part in some stuff that should not have been done. It also showed how it can turn against you. Karma. Being bond to do no harm. And how if you push too hard, things can turn out bad. But also, if you remember the Rede, you are better off. Practical Magic was also a good one. How the aunts meant well and even though she was happy...they should have not given her the push. Because life has a way of playing out. And I loved how the act of love of sisters helped to break the curse and make life well again. The Convenant...although it showed how power con corrupt. It also showed how a Father was willing to give his life and power to save a son that understood the important factor to not abuse. And then my favorite....Nanny McPhee!!!!! She was a woman that used magic to help make life right. She taught lessons and encouraged understanding. THAT was the most beautiful!!!

Oh yes how can you forget about Nanny McPhee! That was a great one! I haven't seen The Convenant. I thought it looked to dark and well putting bad light on the subject.

The Mists of Avalon - A scene from The Mists of Avalon mini series from TNT.
Those two movies are the ones that came to my mind too. I love The Mists of Avalon - especially the book which is really so much better. I agree that The Craft was doing a good job until they turned. It was actually an encouragement movie for me. I think that although the Harry Potter films are not realistic it still shines a positive light on witchcraft/ witches. And that is at least a start. As far as just magic is concerned I think that Star Wars is a good example. Because I think that the Force and what we consider magic are basically the same.

One mini series I like is call The Good Witch, it's kinda cute all things considered and doesn't show magic in a bad light.

I love "Practical Magic" and how it does show witches, magic and the whole picture in a great view. "The Craft" I liked as well but it does show how power in the untrained can be dangerous which is a good message in a way. I noticed someone mentioned "Halloweentown" and that was a great series of movies. I've loved all of them. How about "Bedknobs and Broomsticks"? That was a great movie that showed witches in a good light. Angela Lansbury was great in the role. You could even put "Marry Poppins" in that role although I'm sure some will say she wasn't a witch but think about the magic she showed in there. I doubt that would be considered normal. That one most seem to accept without a problem.

There's more than one movie called A Night onWitch Mountain. The one I liked is Italian, but I saw the dubbed version. Guess they changed the title too. Showed the Strega in a realistic light up to the standard movie nonsense of sacrifice. I loved angel Heart- which doesn't show it in a positive light, but shows voudons as strong people about their own thing while Johnny angel was the bad guy who went too far..,I love that horrific movie.

Hey, I like Harry Potter. Even though it is based more on fanasty and not really Pagan or Wiccan. But it does show how magic can do good too.

Well, the truth is Harry Potter is fantasy kind of witchcraft and isn't really related to those of us who follow true "witchcraft" beliefs and are followers of the wiccan/pagan path--of course there are probably a lot of us real witches who would just love to wave a wand and turn someone who is nasty like Draco Malfoy into a ferret! Or drink Poyljuice potion and temporarily change into someone else....AND I give anything to have Hermione's time turner...I really wish I COULD be in two places at once...LOL
