Does It Annoy You That Most Movies about Witchcraft are So Negative?

I guess it's because evil sells better as a genre in the movie industry, but does it annoy you that the vast majority of movies that depict anything involved with the magical or witchcraft world is always so negative...evil...It seems movies like that only add to and perpetuate peoples notion of what witchcraft is...which is so utterly negative and opposite from the way wicca/witchcraft/paganism really is

Why are you hitting on my pet peeve? LOL
Annoy doesn't even begin to cover how I feel. It makes me extremely angry!
Let's take a look at the movie The Wicker Man. The original movie was extremely good. Then Hollywood (or the Christian Coalition) decided they needed to put an end to all that, so they pulled out a wad of cash and re-did the movie.
This being Hollywood, they couldn't have people rooting for the detective to burn at the end, now could they? Noooo. So let's get a good actor for the part of the detective, someone the majority here in America likes and wouldn't want to see hurt. Hmm...hey, is Nicholas Cage busy? No? Perfect.
And let's change the story, let's make Nicholas' character nicer and the people of the island ruder. While we're at it, let's change the whole entire theme of the story, shall we? Let's make those Pagans look as cruel and heartless and selfish as we possibly can.
There's only one real answer to WHY, isn't there? Hollywood is run by the money provided by Christians, no doubt about it. They can talk all they want about how they do what they want and when they want to, but it all boils down to all of them being run by the Christians.
It also irks me to no end whenever you're watching television and there's even the slightest mention of the occult and Hollywood feels that the only way to convey this is to use an inverted pentagram. Why don't you ever see an inverted cross? It especially makes me angry when a program is talking about Satanism - why use the inverted pentagram, when an inverted cross would make so much more sense?
And it's not just movies, it's the blasted talk shows too. Not one talk show has ever bothered inviting a reputable Pagan to their show. How they find the people they do get on the show, I have no idea, but they scrape the bottom of the barrel for sure.
You've started a really good discussion!

I LOVE the original Wicker Man.
fantastic film. and you do really side with the good old Pagan community.
to be honest though, i didn't find the new one too bad. the plot was mostly the same with a few changes, parts of the dialogue were identical. their biggest failure was somehow completely sapping it of atmosphere.
anyway, I reckon they chose Cage because he's wooden. makes him easier to burn
hehe.

Ahhhh, Pyewacket, you must see the original "Wicker Man"! It stars Edward Woodward - you might remember him as "The Equalizer". He's tall and British and gray, and very very British. Did I mention that before? Well, he is, completely.
There's nothing like a witchcrafty tale told by the Brits, they have such a fun time of it!
I loved the ending...but I can't tell you - you'll have to see it for yourself. :)

Why thank you that you mentioned I started a good discussion--I unfortunately didn't see either new or old versions of The Wicker Man, but from the trailers I saw of the new version I just knew it wasn't going to be very positive..and I do happen to like Nicholas Cage to boot...Want to hear really infuriating--one time I was casually talking about Wicca, and the "person" (can't use the language I would like to use) asked.."oh you mean like the movie The Wicker Man"--wanted to punch the person's lights out!
Another infuriating movie--the one with Johnny Depp...the Ninth Gate which was very loosely based on the novel by Arturo Perez-Reverte--the book was good, I read it after seeing the movie since I wanted to compare it...the book is more about the lost and rare copy of wrtings by Alexandre Dumas (the original book was called The Dumas Club)--it was more about the book by Dumas and his association with the occult...it really didn't have anything to do with what was in the movie version--figures...what was in the movie was only a small fraction of what was in the book, but of course, Hollywood decided to glorify it.
You're right--that would be a fantastic idea though about some kind of Pagan/Wiccan organization to see that movies are "politically" correct---It's only been say ten years, that movies HAVE to be politically correct for instance in depiction of Native Americans, and have Native American actors for the roles, rather than wasichus ( white folk )painted up Indian style with make-up and wear long wigs to look Indian. (I'm part Native
btw) In fact just about any ethnic group is usually protected now by the politically correct thing....so why NOT a Pagan/Wiccan organization to do the same--very good point

It can be annoying I do agree there but actually what I find more annoying is that society is so willing to believe it. If I did a movie showing a priest or a reverend going on a murder spree most of society would not believe that all priests would do this. It is very irritating that they assume that just because hollywood shows a witch being evil that all witches are evil. They recently did a movie called "Bad Santa" does society think now that all Santa's are that way? I doubt it. Hollywood uses whatever works to make money but society should still know better.

To quote you..."Hollywood uses whatever works to make money but society should still know better..."
Uh? Not really, since in my opinion you "average" person isn't exactly great in intelligence...lets face it...there are some people that get so wrapped up in what they see on the tv or movies that they think it's real or the truth..not to bash soap opera lovers..hehe...but some people really think what's going on in the lives of the characters is real...I say that cause my grandmother was a soap opera addict and though the stories as gospel truth.
There was one movie that was about a priest who molested boys...can't for the life of me remember the title but I do remember it created a bit of controversy with Catholics since they were under the belief that oh, things like that don't happen in real life..uh, I beg to differ..you hear or read it all the time in the news.

Hey pyewacket: let me tell you a little story. I was once involved with a medieval re-creation group. We had a "torture gallery" that illustrated the forms of torture used by the Inquisition, all in good fun, I might add. It was quite a comedy show. But one day they decided to take it a bit further, finding one of our members a witch. They actually had a stake erected, with lots of kindling piles at the bottom, and they tied this woman to it. Then the chief inquisitor polled the crowd - to burn or not to burn?
You never saw so many idiotic modern-day suburbanites and their kids screaming "Burn the witch!" It actually seemed to be getting out of control, as the inquisitor did a further comedy act a la Daffy Duck, the "witch" blowing out the match every time the inquisitor sparked one to light the fire.
Would you have guessed that several people stepped out of the crowd and offered him their lighters?!
When the mass discovered that we weren't actually going to burn the poor woman (who by then was absolutely in fear of her life) they sauntered off, muttering things like "Geez, and I thought I was going to get to see a real witch-burning." and "Aww, way to decrease the fun factor!"
After that I realized the "the masses" could be enraged into action just as easily as they did during the Salem Witch Trials, and that we cannot guesstimate what could happen in today's society. Apparently we as modern folks still haven't learned from history! We're still enraged villagers.
It just shostah-goyah, eh?

Negative? How bought completely and utterly cheesy - The Craft - the Covenant ... it's just completely the opposite of what it really is. But that's what people love... they don't want to watch a movie about a bunch of happy pagans lighting candles and using herbs.

I tend not to watch movies about Wicca for that reason - it annoys the heck out of me. They seem to depict wiccans as "bad" people who only follow the dark path. But then I guess films about good witches would be a bit boring!
I did like the Exorcist and the Omen films when they came out - but that's more in the horror genre than the Wiccan I think. I do love a good horror movie!lol

Normally Hollywood researches the things it puts on the silver screen. Why not for the Wiccan representation. Why can't we have a Wiccan Screen Guild and make our own movies. Demand accuracy in these movies through our Wiccan lawyers. A good time had by all in the end. Practical Magic was not a bad movie and we could end up with more someday!

I do find it a bit annoying that witchcraft is always depicted in a negative light. But I don't let it get to me to much after all is just a movie, and I don't readily make up my opinions about something based on movies alone. I have no problem with witchcraft (or whatever one perfers to call it) I am very open minded and like to learn about things first hand, not from some made up story I saw in a movie.

I find it extremily anoying that is why I love the Charmed series. They portrayed witches in a positive roll. They were helping innocence and trying to live normal lives just like what we all want to do in the first place.
I would love to see movies portraying the Witch as the force of good and helping instead of evil.

Its funny that I came across this discussion today. Yesterday I got to see Practical Magic for the first time. I thought it was a pretty good movie, especially compared to the other movies of this kind. I was once told that this movie was the closest to being true of all those movies even though parts of it weren't exactly right. I didn't really like the Convenent and The Craft. I agree, it show a negative side and not the real story. I had to laugh at one part where they talked about dancing naked under the moon. A few days before we had been trying to explain the Wiccan religion to my boyfriends 15 year old son. And he said something about us dancing naked under the moon. It was funny hearing it in the movie.

Yes I do but I try to understand that the movie making people are just trying to cash in on the fact that a whole lot of people - especially Christians are afraid of witches. Which actually only fuels the fire for them to be afraid. Regardless that they're suppose to know that movies are make believe.

I get annoyed whenever they use magic alongside the belief of gods/goddesses as evil. I mean, I know some people are interested in using magic for personal gain and for darker purposes than some people are. You can't deny it, and you can't sugar coat the facts. Some people just like the darker aspects of magic. Those people don't always pray to gods or goddesses. But whenever they point to those that are pagan and use magic as being evil people that are only out to hurt and destroy the lives of others, it bothers me because that is definitely giving a very negative view on Wicca especially.

The whole media portrayal of pagans is negative on a whole they either want to portray us as evil or mad hippies with no grip on reality. I think it's because the truth is actually quite boring when you compare it to movies where dramatic things happens like holes to other dimensions being opened and terrifying demons being summoned. The truth is we just appreciate nature a little more than most people and give thanks for it and try to preserve it. And our reward is the benefits we get from the plants we have preserved and a little Magic. Real Magic is nothing like what they show in movies though, it really is sad that so many have such a warped view of our beliefs.

I used to watch the very same movies a a kid, hoping to lean more about the Craft.
Nowadays, I love watching nasty flicks like "The Devil's Rain" (Ack, Ernest Borgnine and Bill Shatner!) and looking to see what they're doing wrong.
Sure, I don't have a diploma in Dark Magicke, but I think I can say for sure that some of those movies got lots and lots wrong.
Then again, a ritual is what you make of it...
Hey, speaking of which, I did enjoy "The Craft": the one about the three school girls who figure out that their powers are significantly complemented by the addition of a real blood witch, and so forth...
I found it interesting to note that the film mentioned a name of a "god" and that I'm familiar with his other personae.
Sometimes they get parts right, most of the time, they get it all wrong.
But I still giggle when I watch Julian Sands brewing up that flying ointment ("Warlock") from the fat of that unbaptised little kid he found in the playground.
Hey, you've gottah laugh at preconceptions. Sometimes they're funny black humor, eh?

Oops I hate to admit it, even though it does show witchcraft in a negative light, but I liked Warlock--but maybe caused I love Julian Sands and the "witch-hunter" Richard E. Grant..and warlock isn't really a real way to describe a male witch anyway--another goof off of realty

This has been a bone of contention for years! Most, you ask? How about ALL?! *laugh* I don't recall a single film that shows witches in a positive light . . . perhaps the one with Sandra Bullock, but even that was a bit of a joke. When I see movies like The Craft and The Covenant, I just have to think of them as one step forward, ten steps back. But don't get me wrong, I do enjoy those films, for what they're worth, I just have to keep it in the back of my mind that they're doing more harm than good.

its just a cynical manipulation of the simple minded. Some audiences have expectations and these have to be met if a film is going to sell. In the world of the hard of thinking, christianity is good without question. Conversly, witches and witchcraft is evil, again without analysis or question. Its all just because the unthinking like it that way, nothing more

I think because of the early tradition and how they see that evil has power like withcrap its been the main idea of it. I think media just make it more strong. I know that witchcrap doens't really protray evil or any wrong doings. Media has been the ruler of our society and I guess for others to see the real meaning of witchcrap is by doing there own research.

No it does not annoy me that most movies about witchcraft are negative. What annoys me is that the movies are about witchcraft in the first place. I have never heard anything positive about being a witch.
I would say that I need to be enlightened, but to be honest, I am really, really not interested. No matter how much they try to glamorize witches and such, it is still evil and of the devil and I don't want any part of it.
