Back Again and Feeling Better, Now May Be Stepping On Some Toes (Who, Me? Sorry) |
|
Hello everyone! It's so great to be back among the people that I care about again. It has been a long haul. I won't be able to post as much as I did for awhile - the house has gone to he11 and back! I just responded to a question posted by a sweet 17 year old young woman asking, "How do you feel about Disney having their first black princess?. I wish that I knew how to find the thread so you could respond to her. http://www.mylot.com/w/di... hope that will get you to it so you can respond. She is fairly new here and has started some pretty good discussions. Now, on to my RANT and RAGE....it would be Mr. Walt Disney himself. Granted, I did not personally know the man but I do personally think he was not the child lover we all believe him to be. In fact, I think he was quite the opposite; and I think for some odd reason, his legacy carries on even today and for what reason totally evades me. Have you ever seen just one Disney movie that did not contain graphic violence or unnecessary death of some kind? Even the fantasy movies have their scary parts - think about Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Just take a moment and think of all of the ones you have seen. Was there not a moment that either made you cry or at the very least startled you? If it did that to you, what does it do to a child? We worry about other violence that our children see, but if it says "Disney" automatically think it is good, healthy, and proper viewing. Okay, I feel better now~Donna

2. APMorison (276) | 3 years ago | In partial defense of the subject matter the works were based on - if you've ever read any of the original versions of the 'fairy tales' that some of his stuff is based on its the Disney revised version is often much tamer than, say the Brothers Grimm stories.
On the other hand - it has long been discussed that Walt kept an iron grip on much that went on with Disney - including the careers of any of the Disney actresses who portrayed the innocent, virginal types - even in films that were not Disney made, they're contract with Disney made certain claims on the actress that prevented them from taking particular types of roles, etc - case in point - ever noticed that Annette Funicello was always more Covered in any of the films she did that were not Disney, where her 'friends' were in much skimpier attire? (Beach Movies)
Walt was known for his absolutely Rigid Stance on much that was Disney - so yeah - ol' Walt was definitely a meanie

She actually has talked about this on shows and interviews and that she kept the promise. If you look at her beach movies the bikini comes up and covers the belly button. What is so sensual about that aspect of the body I don't know but that was the one thing he asked her not to show. I guess she could show everything else though if she wanted.

3. kathy77 (6867) | 3 years ago | Hi, Welcome back, I bet it must be great to be back. Oh I shall have a look at this discussion you are talking about here. Most disney movies that I have seen have been lovely, yes I have actually never seen any disney movie with graphic violence, or anything of that kind when I watched them. Oh that is not good if this is what disney believe that they are good for children to see unhealthy, or violence of any kind.

4. cremechese (4503) | 3 years ago | Oh I was scared to death at movies all the time, Disney included. Or maybe especially because that was mostly what we saw. Big witches, and mother deers dying, people poisoned, all kinds of stuff lol. Yeh, most Disney movies have something disturbing in them as I recall.

5. emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | I agree that most of the movies had scenes that might startle or ones that made us cry. I don't think that is neccessarily wrong for kids to see though. They do some times need to see that stuff. It helps them to deal with death and loss in their real lives. I don't think the few scary scenes were that scary. Not out of bounds for kids and in fact that Disney (or the company) usually altered the original stories to make them less intense then origanally written. For example the original story of the Little Mermaid, she died at the end. She didn't get her prince or anything like that. They changed it to make for the happy ending.
As to the violence I don't think it was that graphic really or maybe we have different points of view on what is graphic violence. I can think of several movies that didn't have violence in them. "Cat From Outer Space" and "Shaggy DA" come to mind right off. I don't think there was any violence in those. None that I would consider violence anyway let alone graphic. Even both verison of "The Parent Trap" didn't show any violence that I can think of.

kitchenwitchoftupper (1379) | 3 years ago | I do stand corrected on the ones that you have mentioned here. But these movies I do believe were made after the passing of dear old Walt (I could be terribly wrong in my time frame though).
I am in total agreement that children can use exposure to such things; but not at most every movie they see. I guess that after reading another memeber's post (Lecanis) about her 10 month old son, and remembering how difficult it is to be a parent, especially a first-time parent, I wish that parents didn't have to face such difficult choices all of the time.
Indeed death and dying, violence as in attack scenes from some of his cartoons, are done in ways that mask reality, but little brains absorb things in different ways and to me it is all about desensitizing them.
The way things in our world have been for the past several years I find it much more appropriate (I am not saying I find it appropriate) to plop a 10-12 year old in front of a movie riddled with sexual inuendo and mabe even some T & A shots than in front of the 6:00 news.
Oh, there I go again Emerald! As I said, dear friend, I am back~Donna

7. joyce423 (1216) | 3 years ago | Welcome back Donna! As with regard to the owner of thread, I also add her as my friend so that I can easily check out her topics and response to her.:)
You know what. you make sense. I have never evern seen any cartoons from Walt Disney that doesn't contain any violence unless it is a fairytale. But if we are going to check out those mickey mouse - donald duck stuff, they all contain such violence which I also think is not proper for children to watch. Now it made me realized if Mr. Walt disney really has a heart for children.
hehehe... The only thing that would make you better is venting out. I hope you will feel better than better now.:)

8. ElusiveButterfly (9500) | 3 years ago | I never think of these things on my own. It usually takes prompting from another person to actually make me recall something about a movie that I never considered before.
Glad to see you back Donna. Missed having you around! Huggers to you.
