The Citadelle was build on top of a 3000 foot mountain east of Cap Haitien by King Henri Christophe in the early 1800s. His purpose was to be able to beat off an invasion from France, but they never tried to invade Haiti again. The defeat of the French army in Haiti cost Napoleon so many resources and troops that it effectively ended his conquest of Europe. So, the Haitians not only defeated the French in Haiti, but that defeat also saved Europe from Napoleon. No wonder Napoleon hated General Toussaint Louverture, the Haitian military genius who orchestrated the defeat of France, so much that he had Toussaint kidnapped and taken to France to die of exposure in a French prison in the mountains. | |
