Newly on Her Own - This little moose is a yearling calf. She appeared to be very unaware of any dangers from humans. I got within 10 feet of her very easily before she showed any signs of discomfort at my presence. She appears to be an 'early run off'. This means that the mother probably had a late Spring Calf and couldn't take care of her anymore so chased her away. Most of the time calves stay with their mothers for up to two years. Also, she may be an orphan. Mom might have been hit by a car. Her lack of fear towards humans is a little scary. She could end up in trouble. But, my guess is she will live in the park until she is big enough to make it to the mountains on her own. (That's where they go when it's time to find a hubby moose). She is only about as tall as I am (a little over five feet). It will be interesting to watch her grow up! I plan to try to keep track of her over the summer because we spend a lot of time in park she lives in and would be neat to be able to see how she develops after being left alone at such a young age. As a nature photographer I am very very grateful to her for allowing me to be so close that I could get these awesome shots!
