English - English is the de facto world language and that is unlikely to change any time soon. Even if the United States was not the largest economy in the world, English would still be preferable to most other languages. English is unique among world languages in the richness of its vocabulary. There are simply more words in the English language than any other due to the history of its development as a product of the fusion of Latin, Germanic and Celtic languages.
