Devils on Bike - Once a year, at the beginning of the Saka year (Balinese calendar), Balinese celebrates “Nyepi” Day or “Silent” Day. “No fire, no sound and no travel”. People living in Bali are not allowed to lit fires, to turn on lights, to make noise or to go out of the house. All ports and airport close for 24 hours. No television relays. Since Bali is a tourist’s destination, special conditions applied to hotels. Hotel operates as normal, however they are to turn off lights on the outside and dim the inside lights. Guests are not allowed to go outside the hotel’s ground and are to have dinner before the sun sets. On the eve of Nyepi Day, there will be “Ogoh-ogoh” parade. This parade symbolizes how Balinese getting rid the devils off the Island. The next day Bali is dark and silent, and hoping all the devils and bad spirits are chased away from the Island. Ogoh-ogoh is made a couple months before the event. Some are really scary, some are funny, and some are imaginary. This is my favorite this year.
