Indira Gandhi - Indira Gandhi was Prime Minister of India for two terms, 1966-1977 and 1980-1984. She instituted a number of socialist economic reforms and fought a successful war against Pakistan, but she was later embroiled in political controversy and a fierce Hindu-Sikh ethnic conflict, leading to her assassination in 1984. Her son, Rajiv Gandhi, succeeded her as prime minister, but was himself assassinated by Tamil militants.
