How do you change preferences to allow mature content?

I cannot for the sake of it figure it out myself. I'm missing out on some good posts due to this. Going to 'preferences' at the top, doesn't work.

When reading discussion sometimes I come across postings that say mature content go to prefrences to be able to view. I can't figure out how to do this. I hope I am not going to feel really stupid when someone explains it to me....
