Life expectancy of hamsters

Our little dwarf hamster died at the age of 4yrs. He died of old age. Even the vet was quite shocked at his age. Have you had a hamster that lived so long. The hamsters we have had died between 18mths and 2yrs.

I've also got dogs, so D-Con is out. I use glue traps and put peanut butter in them--I caught the last mouse in a few hours (after the dogs ate the peanut butter!). Does anyone have any other tips?
