Does your reputation value fluctuate, or just go up always?

I found that my reputation value fell from 8 to 7 several days ago, and then back to 8, and fell to 7 now again. I wonder whether yours also fluctuate, or just go up always?

My reputation value declined from 8 to 7, what does that mean?

I have a reputation star now. I found it was 8 yesterday, but today it is 7. I wonder what that means? Does it mean that my postings are of less quality than before?
