Tips for a beginner at sewing?

I haven't sewn anything since grade school when I took a home economics class, but I am interested in getting a sewing machine and learn to sew. What tips would you have for a beginner seamstress?

anyone out there know how to sew. i know in the day and age, when everyone it seems is buys everything, there are a few of us who prefer to make certain things in our home. anyone with links, or tips....please help a sister out!
