Distortion from the amp or from a stomp box?

Do you prefer amp or stomp box distortion? I bet tube amp distortion is better than stomp boxes distortion but maybe using stomp boxes a wider range of sounds is reachable.

I discovered gearwire.com last summer. It is great to see such reviews of gear. So I discovered a lot of features of stomp boxes and amplifiers.
