Half of US kids will get food stamps, study says email this discussion to a friend?

CHICAGO (AP) - Nearly half of all U.S. children and 90 percent of black youngsters will be on food stamps at some point during childhood, and fallout from the current recession could push those numbers even higher, researchers say.

The estimate comes from an analysis of 30 years of national data, and it bolsters other recent evidence on the pervasiveness of youngsters at economic risk. It suggests that almost everyone knows a family who has received food stamps, or will in the future, said lead author Mark Rank, a sociologist at Washington University in St. Louis.

"Your neighbor may be using some of these programs but it's not the kind of thing people want to talk about," Rank said.

The analysis was released Monday in the November issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The authors say it's a medical issue pediatricians need to be aware of because children on food stamps are at risk for malnutrition and other ills linked with poverty.

"This is a real danger sign that we as a society need to do a lot more to protect children," Rank said.

Food stamps are a Department of Agriculture program for low-income individuals and families, covering most foods although not prepared hot foods or alcohol. For a family of four to be eligible, their annual take-home pay can't exceed about $22,000.

According to a USDA report released last month, 28.4 million Americans received food stamps in an average month in 2008, and about half were younger than age 18. The average monthly benefit per household totaled $222.

Rank and Cornell University sociologist Thomas Hirschl studied data from a nationally representative survey of 4,800 American households interviewed annually from 1968 through 1997 by the University of Michigan. About 18,000 adults and children were involved.

Overall, about 49 percent of all children were on food stamps at some point by the age of 20, the analysis found. That includes 90 percent of black children and 37 percent of whites. The analysis didn't include other ethnic groups.

The time span included typical economic ups and downs, including the early 1980s recession. That means similar portions of children now and in the future will live in families receiving food stamps, although ongoing economic turmoil may increase the numbers, Rank said.

An editorial in the medical journal agreed.

"The current recession is likely to generate for children in the United States the greatest level of material deprivation that we will see in our professional lifetimes," Stanford pediatrician Dr. Paul Wise wrote.

Wise said the Archives study estimate is believable.

"I find it terribly sad, but not surprising," Wise said.

James Weill, president of Food Research and Action Center, a Washington-based advocacy group, said the analysis underscores that "there are just very large numbers of people who rely on this program for a month, six months, a year."

"What I hope comes out of this study is an understanding that food stamp beneficiaries aren't them - they're us," Weill said.

The analysis is in line with other recent research suggesting that more than 40 percent of U.S. children will live in poverty or near-poverty by age 17; and that half will live at some point in a single-parent family. Also, other researchers have estimated that slightly more than half of adults will use food stamps at some point by age 65.

I hope people are aware that being on Food stamps isn't anything to worry about and that even if you don't want to talk about it, it is ok to use the help provided to you as long as you don't abuse it! If you need the help don't be afraid to ask that is why it is there.

Food stamps help more than just the poor, it helps the farmer, the grocer, the middleman. They help the economy and they help with unemployment, so when you see someone using food stamps just think how they are boosting the economy.

It is always nice to have someone pay for your food, and your children food. If a couple can't afford to buy food for themselves, would they ever think of not getting pregnant and not have children, until they can manage to feed themselves and have a stable income before they try to raise a family of a dozen children, it is almost impossible for that to happen in USA, with so many entitlement programs given out free by government, it is no wonder this government is bankrupted this country sooner than many other countries.

You can't be serious. You really think that's it in a nutshell? Things happen that people don't expect, like losing their jobs, getting paycuts, gas going skyhigh and half the grocery budget now going in the gastank, inflation eating away at the budget in general so that groceries become a luxury, catastrophic illness, insurance premiums and taxes driving up the monthly mortgage, or rent going up if you're a renter. Statements like the one you made cause people who already feel like crap because the economy has eaten up all their resources and have forced them to ask for help, feel even worse. Good job, there.

We can bleed money to other countries in foreign aid which is money taken from the people of this country in the form of taxes, but when those same people need help, they shouldn't ask for it? It is stunning that in an economy like the one we're in right now, such things as you have stated here could even be thought, let alone said.

Settle down there NoirAngelique, I think lampar may have a point here. See it is really rather nice for responsible folk to work all day at a job they may or may not enjoy so they can earn a living and make their way and pull their own weight in this world only to be taxed to no end and have their incomes slashed dramatically so we can support the leeches and spongers of society and their surplus of children, and yes, like it or not but I'd say at least 99% of these welfare seekers packin them food stamps have a small village of kids that they have illegitimately released from their loins because by golly they just can't seem to figure out how not to get pregnant. These people are lazy and just looking for a free ride through life and what's worse is a lot of these shysters are not only getting food stamps but also getting disability from a fake back injury or something. Why should you get a free ride off of people NoirAngelique, assuming you are on food stamps? Also go back and read this article better as there are some certain facts stated you may have missed.

In case you don't know how to read, i am not talking about people who feel like crap because of this economy recession, i am talking about receiving food stamp indefinitely by couple who don't even bother to seek work but having a half dozen to a dozen of children leech on government entitlement program and American tax payer dollars in raising their kids, make no mistake about it, it is the hardworking folks that are contributing and subsidizing these family in carrying out their responsibility instead of the adult couple/ parent who is supposed to do that, what is so wrong to say that couple who can't shoulder the responsibility of being a parent shouldn't have child let alone many of them in the first place, so who is that to blame for such an irresponsible act if their children go hungry? It is not the government neither the fault of other people who choose not to have children whenever possible.

Food stamps are just one in long list of entitlement programs that have caused problems in our country, and it seems as though the only answers our elected leaders, especially those with a D behind their name, seem to come up with is more entitlement programs. The thing with these entitlement programs is once they've taken hold, they are almost impossible to eliminate. Even though it is pretty obvious that they hurt our society because so much of the money taken from individuals in the form of taxes to fund these programs disappear through corruption, fraud, waste, and/or abuse, anyone that suggests eliminating these programs is portrayed as an evil-doer or whatever. Americans are a very compassionate group. If we eliminated, or at least dramatically cut, the entitlement programs Americans would be more able to help their neighbors or give to charities that can more efficiently help those in need.
