SEATTLE (AP) - Environmentalist attorney Mike McGinn's lead in the race to be Seattle's next mayor spiked Monday by more than 2,500 votes, giving him a significant lead over his opponent, T-Mobile executive Joe Mallahan.
It's a gap Mallahan may not be able to close. He called for a press conference following the results.
After Monday's King County results, McGinn's lead was nearly 5,000 votes. Last Friday, he led Mallahan by 2,384 votes.
State law requires a re-count if the margin is fewer than 2,000 votes and less than one-half of 1 percent of the total vote.
In the August primary, McGinn and Mallahan finished ahead of incumbent Mayor Greg Nickels.
