Fluorescent vs Incadescent

compact fluorescents - compact fluorescent lightbulbs are becoming more convenient and less expensive than when they first made their appearance. Being highly pushed by "greenies" everywhere, we can find them as a regular fixture in most american households. But at what price?

Have you jumped on the band wagon of replacing incadescent bulbs with fluorescent? They come in convenient sizes now, and they are supposed to give off more light for less energy than their counterparts. But, at what cost? When an incadescent bulb burns out - you simply throw it away. Or if it shatters, you sweep or vacuum it up and dispose of it. Right? What about the Flourescents? if you have a break it can cost you nearly $2000 to have it taken care of! what??? bio-engineers to dispose of flourescent waste? yep, they have mercury in them and that is bio hazardous, how much of this mercury is going into the land fills, or poisoning our homes? take a look at this women's experience... http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55213 I am not a big fan of flourescents, not because of the above news, as I was ignorant to that - but because they make me feel queezy. Going to shopping centers with all the flourescent lighting makes me confused and sickly. The Mall is simply out of the question.

Oh yeah modestah, the energy saving bulbs are the in-things now. They give good cool light and it doesnt dig deep into your pocket. My country has recently joined the campaign to rid the city of bad bulbs. I went to work and returned home to find they had replaced all the bad bulbs with energy savers in my home! so am very much happy with new and better bulbs!

I am not too sure the incadescents are the "Bad bulbs" They cost more energy for the amt of light - and that affects the coal mines if the electricity is produced by coal instead of solar, wind, or water power. I detest not having choices and this phasing out of incadescents gets my dander up a bit. Especially now after learning the dangers of fluorescents. What about the epileptics, will they have no place in society, do they not matter? that all artificial light sources must be fluorescent? I wonder how the LED lights will be for us? Maybe I should just go without lightbulbs all together and live as my great grandparents from sun up to sun down.

I had a teacher who told us years ago that flourescent bulbs also have some property that can cause seiazures in certain individuals. I don't know if that is true or not, though. I have the bulbs tha are energy efficient, but can be plugged into normal lamps. I thought they were flourescent.

yes, those are the fluorescents I was thinking of, the compacts. I think it is the flickering that can cause epileptic seizures. Just like the japanimation cartoons, hand held video games and CRT monitors, I guess.

I have absolutely no use for f;uorescent lighting. I find it very hard on the eyes for one thing and I don't like a lot of light at anytime. I prefer a dim lite room any day of the week. If it was just the light bulbs using power my power bill would nearly be free I'm sure. You raised a good point about the disposal, something I don't know a lot about. Take Care
