"Don't be so smart !! " Do you believe in flattering?

I work in an office and know some of my colleagues who everytime try to remain around the boss and keep up the practice of flattering. The boss seems to be liking the same. But sometimes the boss even realizes that its over and becomes so irritated that he admonish by saying "Don't be so smart!" . Well, those guys are successful however in making their position good. I makes others to think that they should go for the same practice. Do you believe in flattering or have you ever see a sort of chat "Don't be so smart!!". Please share your comments. Thanks!
