Not all black ppl are African/American. The ones that do call themselves that are most likely to have African roots in their family tree even though they are born and live here in America, therefore they are African/Americans.

It is like the Indo-Canadians here. If they are born in Canada that makes them Canadian. I think it is strange. I am Canadian and my grandparents were Welsh,Scottish and English. When asked my nationality I always reply Canadian. I am proud to be Canadian. I have friends tho, that say "oh I'm Scottish" but their parents and their parents before that were born in Canada. Therefore I think they are Canadian not Scottish. So I think that African-Americans born in the states should just call themselves American and be proud to be American. Most of them have never even set foot in Africa!

Well, it is obvious that their ancestors were Africans and now they are Americans. I think it is logical to call them that.

They just want to keep ties with their heritage I think. Just like some Native Americans still call themselves... Native Americans.

Why do black people call themselves African American.
Personally speaking I don't believe that it's most of the black people that are walking around calling themselves African American...... I believe that this was just a term that came down through history and was given to people of color just as the terms black, negro, niger were terms that were given, most never had a choice in the matter.
