Do you like translating for others?

Many people translate between languages for a fee. Some people translate for commercial purposes. Have you ever done that? How much money did you make? Do you think it is worth the trouble of listening to the speaker and then having to translate? Sometimes the speaker has a heavy accents or may use expressions that you don't know. It would make me look stupid. Who went to a translation school to become a translator? Did you think it was easy? It is embarrassing to find translation errors in texts? It seems like I always find them when I read a translation. Perhaps the company used a computer ;). Have a nice day. Pablo

I did translate at one of my jobs in retail. They always tried to have one spanish speaker on each story of the store. I was a sales associate (neat name for a clerk lol), but if customer service needed help, I'd step in. I got more hours this way! Now my spanish sucks, so I wouldn't be able to do that. I do translate for my husband sometimes, and order food for him at Mexican restaurants so he doesn't sound like an idiot.

Hehehe, I do that as well, order for people. It is nice to do sometimes, but I am sure they don't mind if you order in English. :).

I almost got an opportunity to do it professional but the deal went through. Translation is not that easy - unless you are highly proficient in both languages. And, it is good money if you get to do it. You can work full time hours and get a very decent pay cheque.

Yes, you are right. Sometimes people get paid 21 USD per hour to translate or more for professionals such as in court or something. However, I have seen translators on shows such as Miss America or Miss Universe and they don't translate the entire dialogue---but rather they give a summary. I can see how some people just don't translate well :( Pablo
