A team at the UK's Rutherford Appleton Laboratory has been developing technology they hope will actually go on a test flight. The research has been presented at the Royal Astronimical Society's National Astronomy Metting in Preston.
The team plans to trap a cloud of plasma inside a magnetic field they will generate themselves, by running current through lops of wires. In principle, the magnetic field should deflect charged particles. In the next few months, the grup plans to see how well the field will hold onto the plasma cloud by running a test in a 2m-long vacuum chamber.
What other star trek technology would you like to see implemented?

I didn't really understand it. They are trying to trap plasma inside a magnetic field, right?
But what would is the use of this? I mean, why are they trying to do it? Because I didn't get it, there would be no reason to trap Plasma into a field... Or is there?
Please, give me some more information about this project, since it really made me interested!
Thank you very much.
