s where you live important to you, or can you adapt to your environment. I live in the rural north of England, quite a beautiful place. I honestly cant imagine living anywhere else, what about you? can you move anywhere and settle in, or are you like me with a deep sense of place and belonging?

It is not just a matter of adapting to the environment, one must also adapt to people and their history, customs and psychology. I have moved around a bit and have settled in sometimes, other times not. But like you, I also have a deep sense of place and belonging, the only problem is that the places are there, but I am somewhere else! I have three passports and I dream about the fourth one I never bothered to get. I feel I belong to some of those places, for different reasons: love, family history, convenience, way of thinking. Belonging is a funny thing.

my home area - i cant imagine living anywhere else but here yet others can easily leave their place of birth
thank you, it is a strange part of human nature that we feel belonging but still feel the need to move

Human nature, but maybe family history too! I have a family tree where one can see my ancestors migrated from Utrecht, Holland to Argentina back in the late 18's. Then they mixed with the locals ending up with my family. It was my father who decided to migrate to Australia in the late 60's, but now it seems it is the next generation that is making the decision to migrate, not the parents, although they do seem to follow along! The reason seems to be the same though, education and economy. My family is spread wide though and we would have a hard time having a family reunion now: USA, Canada, Australia, Spain, Austria and the Dominican Rep.

The place where I dwell is of prime importance to me. It is where I was born and still find an existence. I love my birthplace ..every nook and corner of it is familiar to me.

I would love to visit England. I love living in Lincoln Nebraska which is in the midwest plains area of the U.S. There are places I would like to have vacation homes but for the time being Lincoln Nebraska is home base. I could adapt to a new environment but at this time I don't feel called to do so.

I think i can adapt to my environment but it is different when i am in my hometown. It's not only the sense of belongingness, i also consider the people i live with and also the memories i have with the place.

i think our connection to a place is mixed with our history and the people who we meet each day blessed be

Here we think different. I like my place of born but i consider myself to belong to all world...Is not more important than is all beautiful town or country from this world...If i can live here i can live everywhere same good,i think... Well,i love to see all world and sometimes i feel little claustrofobia when i see same places all time... I think i have a nomad blood inside me,and if i could live in a rulote...i will be happy... augusta

i too love to travel the world. I want to see it all before i die. However, I also feel grounded here, im not sure if it is history or a romanticised link, but my family have lived in 3 close villages for 7 hundred years and find it difficult to imagine moving any where else thank you for your reply, blessed be

I think I can adapt to living anywhere as that is exactly what I have done. Back in the 70s I moved up to Lancashire - not very rural, but it was a bit of a shock coming from the South Wales coastal area. It was night when I first arrived so didn't see very much. When I awoke next morning, I noticed that all the buildings had this black stuff all over the stonework - the result of the mills that were still in full swing at the time. The people were absolutely great though. So friendly in comparison to where I grew up and everybody kept themselves to themselves. The Lancastrians would actually talk to you if they caught your eye as you were leaving your house. It quickly became home for me and lived there for 12 years and married a Yorkshire lass, whom I met when I was working as a musician. I then lived in Spain for a while and whilst I wanted to stay there, in those days, as Brits there were all sorts of barriers to extending my work permit, so I had to come back to Blighty. Eventually I returned to South Wales to work where I re-trained in psychotherapy when the bottom dropped out of the music business. I am about 40 miles away from my home city of Swansea and now live in Cardiff, which I consider to be home. Whilst I can see my roots are in Swansea, this is not a problem for me, I don't feel, like my dad did, that I will have to go back and be buried there. In fact, it is up to who's left of how my remains are to be disposed of as I don't think I would worry about it.

i too have been a bit of a nomad, i live Near Huddersfield in Yorkshire, i was born here but have lived in Plymouth (i was at university there) Lancaster, i did a masters degree there. But i have always come home and live in a village near the place of my birth and it is the same area in which my family have lived from at least 1329. Such continuity gives me a deep sense of place, and i cant imagine being anywhere else blessed be
