Fix It First

Hi Friends and Members this one was sent to me from my sister and I thought this may help you. Our family has turned an old-fashioned 'lost art' into a modern way of saving money! We often lamented the fact that our children had not learned the art of making do and fixing things, the way it was done 'in our day'. So we came up with what we call our 'Family Challenge'. Whenever something breaks in our house these days, we have a friendly competition to see who can fix it! Where necessary my husband stands by, giving hints or suggestions, especially to the younger ones. There is praise all round when a solution is found - often with advice from a hardware store. Our children now have a knowledge of tools that they otherwise would never have had. We had thought of offering a cash incentive for extra encouragement but have found instead that the satisfaction and praise from us is enough - in fact, they actually sometimes ASK if anything has broken that they can fix!

I wish that my parents could have been this way. I barely am able to fix anything on my own and when I do it usually breaks the next day. I would say that I am anti-mechanically inclined. Keep up the good parenting and who knows maybe your children will grown up to be handymen.

I really like this better than almost any other discussion you have started, it appeals to my nature. I cannot stand to let something just get tossed away without at least giving it a good try to fix the problem. You never know what kind of genius you may be raising.

What a valuable lesson to teach your children Kathy! I feel sorry for the kids of today, because most of them wouldn't have a clue how to fix anything; we live in a throw-away society unfortunately. Your kids are leaning skills that will stay with them for life, and they are obviously enjoying it heaps! The fact that their own satisfaction is enough reward speaks for itself. It will also build their self-esteem and teach them to set and achieve goals.
I applaud you - wish there were more parents like you in this world! Good on ya!
