I am going stir crazy! For the last two days I am fighting a battle against ants! Not little ones, but these big black ones. I don't get it! My house is clean, nothing is spilled anywhere, but yet everytime I look up there is another one! I'm not overrun with them, but it's getting annoying. How do I get rid of these pests? And where could they be coming from?

When the warmer weather hits many people have a problem with ants. You can purchase Ant traps and it might be a good idea to get some. I also heard a mixture of 50/50 water and vinegar or equal parts Windex and Ivory Soap work too.

Ants have a anthill somewhere, see if you can find their path (ants always follow the same path)....then you can kill them with gasoline; outside, of course. By destoying their home....you can gain control over the problem. Until the anthill is destroyed, you will probably not get rid of them. You can also purchase some sprinkles from like Lowe's or Home Depot that will discourage them from entering your house again. Explain what is happening...they will point you in the right direction...sorry, I just do not remember what they are called. Best of luck, my friend.

I've looked for the anthill, I still can't find it. With my luck I probably have top secret "roboants". Even when I step on them they don't die! LOL

Here is a link to more info about ants and other species, I think you have Large Black Capenter Ants, they usually nest underground... check your soil for holes, especially if it's sandy and loose soil, you'll see their burrows, and these tunnels can go on for miles!... If you only see one or a few at a time, they are "scouts" and if they find a hint of a food source, you house will be chemically marked and then you'll see more... http://www.buginfo.com/articles/facts_ants.cfm

I had that problem one summer too and did these few things. Ants hate chalk. Find out where they are entering your house and draw a line across it and they won't cross it. Also, Ortho sells this Home Defense spray thing that you can spray indoors and outdoors (claims it's safe for indoor use) but I only spray the outdoors. Just spray it along the perimeters of your home. Will keep ants and all other bugs away from it. It's really good. Also, if you start getting ant hills in your yard and you want to treat it naturally and cheaply like I do, just pour very hot water in it when the ants are most active.

It depends on what type of black ant that you have. If they seem to come out at night more than the day, then you have carpenter ants. There is an easy way to kill these ants because they plagued me for years until I tried this easy remedy. I have been carpenter ant free for about 3 years. I used a jar lid for this mixture. Use a modest amount of honey squirted on the lid, mix in a tablespoon or two of boric acid. Now this is very important. Watch the ants. They have a trail, they will walk this trail everyday. You must place the honey mixture in the trail so that they will walk over it. Once they find the new source of food (they love nectar, the is the reason for honey) they will start to feed on the honey mixture, carry it back to the nest to share with the other ants. In about two weeks all the ants will be gone. Forever. IF they are NOT carpenter ants, then use peanut butter and boric acid, mix until crumbly..this works on any other ant besides fire and carpenter. Allow the ants to feed for a few weeks, they will take the mixture back to the nest and once again that nest will die out. This has worked for me every time. Good Luck!

Oh, we had that problem for several years! Every summer, here they came...marching in. We finally found out that they had a LARGE colony living in a tree that was very close to our house. They exterminator that came showed us their path from the tree to the foundation and up the side of the house and in a VERY tiny opening beside a window. I mean, one could hardly see the opening! We stood there and watched them. Long story short, they had to treat the TREE!! No problem after that!

Last year I got this ant bait called Terro its a kind of gel substance. Put where you see the little pests the most. They will swarm to it for a day or two and then you wont see any at all. Also get some cheap bleach and spray it around the found dation of your house, this will help to deter all ants.
