I agree with the previous response, in fact in Italy (I am italian) most of childre stories begin with a fix starting phrase "C'era una volta..." I think that this way to begin stories is like a passage between reality and fantasy, some kind of magic hallway for children (and not only for them...)

I think it's because it adds to the fairy-tale like beginning. It actually paints a picture that the story might be true and probably could have happened sometime ago, yet no longer exists today. It really pumps the imagination, kinda like "It was a dark and stormy night..."
