The common cold is caused by a virus rather than bacteria, so antibiotics won't help. But you can always work on building up your immune system and relieving your symptoms. Here are some natural ways to fend off that cold. Instructions Step One Take time off. Getting adequate rest will help you get over your cold quickly. Step Two Drink more water than you usually do. Eight glasses a day is standard when you're healthy, so try to drink more than that. Step Three Substitute herbal tea or juice for water to make your liquid intake goals. Step Four Let your appetite dictate how much you eat. If you're not hungry at all, try eating something that's easy to digest, like a banana. Sugar may have a negative impact on your immune system, so limit sweets. Step Five Eat chicken soup if it makes you feel better. It can't rid your body of the virus, but it's easy to digest and may soothe your throat. Step Six Drink an immune-boosting tea of echinacea or goldenseal. You can also take capsules or a tincture. Step Seven Load up on vitamin C every few hours, and take zinc according to bottle directions. Tips & Warnings Use slippery elm and marshmallow for an irritated throat and cough. As with any type of medication, take herbs and supplements according to bottle instructions. If you have any questions or concerns, contact a physician or other healthcare professional before engaging in any activity related to health and diet. These are all great tips. I like gingerale when I've got a cold. Once, when I had a real bad cold, I made some chamomile tea with rosemary, honey, and lemon, and I swear it made me feel better instantly. I had some more of the tea every few hours and by the next day, the cold had diminished to about 25% of what it had been.

These are very good tips. I do most of them and I make sure I get a flu shot every year. I also apply what my mother taught me "feed a cold and starve a fever" So you should always eat when you have a cold because it helps to maintain your strength. Thanks for sharing these tips. All my best, Jerryn
