Do we all feel pain differently?

I have had some quite painful experiences in my life. I once broke almost every bone in my body and then had three heart attacks while recovering. I truely feel this represents the most pain a human body can stand. However, when i gave birth, although it was painful, it was no big deal really. I hear so many people tell me what a terrible time they had in childbirth and i got to wondering if we all experience pain in a different way?

Yes, I would say this is true. It has been said several times that I have a high tolerance for pain, but I have never thought so!
I have fallen over and broken bones in my foot, and sliced my thumb through to the bone on one occasion and just got myself down to A & E and had it sorted without a second thought. Then my heart-attack last year that I didn't even know I was having (but that was because of my meditation). But chronic pain of arthritis that's there day after day isn't something I enjoy and often feel quite sorry for myself.
I don't see how people can judge the pain of others unless they can live in their skin. Which brings me on to another subject. I pick up pain from my clients - it's too coincidental for me not to. Often when they are not even here for an appointment. Then the phone rings and my pain is explained. I need then to become quiet and focus and become one with the pain for it to go - but that is not always a convenient method, so as much as dislike doing it , a painkiller is used.

wow, we have much in common. In my work as a psychic medium i can hear pain. I know that looks stupid but it is the best way i have to describe the situation. I dont feel the pain but i can hear the psychic screams of a soul in termoil

the more my life progresses the more i agree. It seems the more experience of pain you have the more you are able to put it in to perspective

Wow! Breaking nearly every bone in your body...that is pretty extreme! Glad to read that you are okay! I cam see how labor and delivery would be nothing after that!
I do believe what we experience is how we handle any pain later felt.
Take my partner and I as an example.
I have chronic migraines. They started when I was 7 years old and have just grown worse with each passing year in my age. I still type on myLot (right now is proof) when I have a bad migraine. I still get up and take the kids to school. I still make dinner and help with homework. Now...there are some times that I can not do all because of the level of pain.
But if you take my partner as an example...any headache he gets makes him cranky and complains until it is gone. Compared to me...he acts like a big baby. ha ha
However, he claims it is because I have so many migraines that I have grown used to the pain. Well, one would think that I should be worn down from so many years of pain.
So, yes, I think we feel pain differently...I think it depends on what we experience that creates our tolerance. But I also think it depends on our endurance...because even time and enough pain...I will cry like a baby.

I think we do experience it in different ways. I felt childbirth was no big deal either.
To be honest I don't think I was ever in an extreme physical painful situation, so I'm not even sure of what it can be. I think having almost all the bones in your body broken would probably be high up there on the scale, I never broke even one, except if we count my nose that was broken in a silly fight when I was a kid LOL and I don't even remember how much it hurt, so it probably wasn't much either hehe
The worst I have experienced in terms of pain was a toothache from an infection for which I couldn't take antibiotics because at that time the doctors thought I was having an allergic reaction and were avoiding certain antibiotics.

i don't know much about child birth.. but i think it's the same for every mother.. or.. in different cases.. the pain is different? i think one shouldn't compare whether is it pain or not.. let's say.. someone shoot you on your right arm.. and at the same time.. that someone shoot your friend on his right arm too.. will you ask your friend how he felt? i think different people will feel different pain...maybe your friend is a little weaker.. then he will say that's the most painful thing he ever felt in his whole life.. but if you're used to being shot.. i think you will say.. 'oh, that's not really painful compared to chopping your fingers' .. haha.. see the difference? that's why =)

Hi, ESKARENA, you are such a strong woman! How brave you are! Broke almost every bone in body and 3 heart attacks! You must be very brave to come through it! your family must be very worried about you. Glad to see that you are so healthy now.
I had a quite painful experience when I was 8 years old, I've been in an operation when I boken my bone, however, the hospital short of anesthetic at last, so, at the last 15 minutes, the doctor stitched 9 holes with thread on my wound without anesthetic. That's so pain!

I feel that people have different pain tolerences. I have a very low pain threshold. It is better than it used to be. When I was younger, I would faint when my mother was putting my hair up or getting a needle. I don't do that anymore. But I can't stand pain. Probably what a normal person would rate at 2 or 3 on a scale of 10 for pain I would give a 5 or 6.

Yes I believe we all have different pain thresholds
I also think that for childbirth, it is not only how the mum feels the pain but I think that fro some women the pain is actuaaly stronger ... some have more painfull contractions, labor time is a factor too because the longer it is the harder you cope with pain
I really think a lot of factors impact the perception of pain, but pain itself as well ... some things like a good moral, and feeling cared for ...

I think we all experience pain differently. I have also had some quite painful experiences in my life but not exactly what you have been through. You poor thing. I have had the experience of labor and that was very painful for me to lay there for 15 hours in hard labor before having my daughter. I also had a hysterectomy and that was just as painful as being in labor for me. I think each of us either have hard pains in one sense and soft pains in other senses. All of our bodies experience pain differently in each area.

I think that we all feel pain a bit differently in that some of us are quick to shake things off. Others may have some nerve damage so that they may not feel something in a certain area of their body. I have a friend who had cancer and the chemotherapy caused minor nerve damage to some areas of his body.

Actuall i also think the same way.Everybody does not feel the same pain in same way.I donno why but i also know few person who didnot felt any pain while child birth but many who says it is terrible. It may be related to the mind set of the person.

i am beginning to realise that mind set is important and under hypnosis we can control it

Holy moly...broke almost every bone AND had three heart attacks...You must have real survivor spirit in you! Maybe congratulations should be in order??
I've been dealing with painful bouts of carpal tunnel that will really make me lay low for awhile...and a lot of painful joint problems especially in my feet and ankles to a point I can hardly walk....but I've been taking that Glucosamine and it seems to be helping a bit One thing I've noticed is that my painful episodes don't last as long as they used to..maybe the only way to explain it is that my tolerance level has risen, so it won't bother me AS much and maybe I just set my mind NOT to let it bother me --also in some ways I just get plain mad at the pain! Its like I talk myself out of it

Yes I really do think we feel pain differently and also our thresholds are all different too! If you speak to different people who have had tattoos for instance, some will say they hurt like hell, some say they hurt for a little while and some say they don't hurt at all, same with childbirth. Brightest Blessings!

I think that some people have a higher tolerence for pain. While some feel like they are just going to die from so much pain you have others who will tell you that the same pain is tolerable. Its all in the way you percieve the pain.
