He's just over 6 months old, but we decided today we will start weaning him from the pacifier. I am not sure how it's going to go over, especially when he needs a nap or sleep, but we'll see! How did you wean your child from a paci? How old were they and do you have any hints for me? Thanks!

The sooner the better! I think the longer you wait the worse it will be to take it away.

We weaned our oldest when he was about one and plan on doing the same for our youngest. We just did it cold turkey, He was upset and frustrated, but it took a couple of days and he got used to going to sleep without it and staying asleep. My suggestion is, don't wean them until you have gotten them to a point of only using it at night time. I found it easier to wean them from "day use" first, and then night time use. If you want you can do it all at the same time, and go completely cold turky, although this may be more difficult than you suspect, *but every child is different, your's might decide that's fine, and use his thumb* Good luck!

Weaning is really a personal preference. The first person I consulted was my children's dentist. I took them each to a dentist specializing only in children when they first popped their first tooth. He said that there was no reason to take away the pacifier until around two and a half years old. My daughter was most attached to it and I gradually weaned her by not allowing her to have it outside the home. Then I took it away during the day and she could only have it at nap and bed time. Eventually I took it away altogether. The problem with weaning them too young is that they might substitute something in it's place like their fingers which is a much harder habit to break. Babies have a strong sucking reflex which is totally natural so there may be no need to wean him so young at this point and may cause you more aggrevation in the long run.

All three of my kids were off the pacifier since they were like 4 months or before. My oldest daughter had it the longest and all I did was take it from her during the day then during nap times then at night time.
