What is your theory on the NPCs?

Is Tortimer really senile? Does Pelly write all of those message board posts? Is Gulliver really referencing Monty Python? Where does Tom Nook get all that money from? How does Crazy Redd keep his black market open? What are YOUR theories to these questions and more concerning the Animal Crossing games? Personally, I believe that when Nook went off to the big city to make his fortune, he met a down-on-his luck Redd, picked him up onto his feet, and the two suddenly made the town theirs, quickly becoming more and more successful, until they had a falling out when Nook discovered Redd had done something deceitful! Ashamed, Nook lit out of the city and back to his hometown (any of 'em) where he'd be less conspicuous, and Redd just kept up with his unscrupulous misdeeds. As for Tortimer, he's definitely flipped his shell. Maybe he's a retired shell shocked koopaling.
