In A Cleft Stick !

When you are in a difficult situation whichever action you take, the consequences will be bad. One of my friends' son scored poorly in the exam and he was thus caught in a cleft stick. If he appeared in the next year for improvement, he would lose a year. If he decided to be satisfied with his score, on the other hand, it would be a blot in his bio-data.

Parents have long believed that children learn to achieve success in school. Not all children have academic brain to excel. Taking harsh measure to force academic success is demoralizing to the spirit of learning. Let children enjoy doing what they like. They might discover and develop their hidden talent which will equip them with the skills needed to embark on their future.

It's a phrasal expression meaning = a state of being confused to arrive at a decision.

I'd never heard of it either. I'm always learning new things here.

That is sad. Is there anyway he could take the class in the summer to make it up and not lose a year?
