Do you follow the 3 second rule?

The 3 second rule is when you drop food on the floor or counter or table if you pick it up and eat it before 3 seconds is up then it is okay to eat it. I don't eat it regardless, once it hits the floor it is garbage. I have known people who would still eat it, what do you think?

You know, I guess it all depends on the surface it fell on. If it landed on the table, yeah I might eat it. The counter too. The floor, well in my house no..too many cats running around on my floors to eat off the floor. I don't care if my entire dinner fell on the floor and I had nothing else to eat, I would not eat off my floor (I have actually had this happen and believe me I was pissed-lol-I ended up eating cookies for dinner-and the cats had some of my dinner before I was able to clean it all up-lol)

It depends on what the food is and where it is dropped. In my own kitchen I might if it was like a cookie or something that isn't gooey. I would never do it in a restaurant or anyone elses home. I know how often I clean my floors so I know when it is safe.

They did an episode of myth-busters testing this modern myth (its a show on the discovery channel, very fun). They found that food that sat on the floor for less than 5 seconds was equally contaminated as food that sat there for 30 seconds. So, the 3 or 5 second rule is meaningless, the real question is, "would you eat off the floor?" Personally, it depends on the type of food, the cleaness of the floor and if there is anyone watching (hey, we're being honest here, right?) :-).

Our counters and tables are clean, so that is not an issue there. The floor is a whole other issue and we do not eat off of it.

The floor seems to be off limits doesn't it.

We have a 5 second rule. Wait 5 seconds and one of the cats or dogs will eat it from the floor. LOL Once my hubby made barbequed ribs and a rib slipped from my step-daughter's hands. Forget 3 seconds, that rib never made it to the floor. It was caught by a dog in mid-air.

I've known a few animals like that, and they are usually there when the food would have been fine because I just washed the darned floor!

WTF?! That's the most ridiculous thing I've pretty much ever heard off, lol. I definitely don't do that.

Nope I don't. I would throw it away. As long as something has fallen somewhere else other than one's place and in partcular if it has fallen on the floor, then we should throw it away. That's because it would have been in contact with some possibly nasty bacteria and could cause one to fall ill. It's wise to get rid of fallen food.

Sometimes I would. Depending on what it is. If it drops on the ground or whatever, I'd just wash it or clean it.
