What do you think about this controversial prejudism issue?

Hate Crime Victims Race - This photo goes with my discussion about prejudism. I am just the messenger, passing along an email I got.

I'm just the messenger as I received this email & here's the gist. "(Blacks) raped Christopher Newsom, cut off his pe_nis, then set him on fire & fatally shot him several times while they forced his girlfriend to watch. An even more cruel fate awaited her! Channon Christian, his girlfriend, was beaten and gang-raped in many ways for four days by all of them, while they took turns urinating on her. Then they cut off her bre_asts and put chemical in her mouth, and then murdered her. So (in summary), if a white news radio guy uses the phrase 'Nappy headed' it gets 2 weeks of constant news coverage. If two white people are tortured, raped, and murdered by a group of black people, it barely gets a blip in the news." What do you think about these allegations and this horrible story? I think it is wrong regardless of color if they don't get life in prison and/or sentenced to death in an electric chair or something.

Holy crud, those poor people. I have seen none of the media coverage as I am in Ireland, but is it true that that barely got a mention on the news? TN is in the south, is it not? I would have though all you know what would break loose if a white couple were abducted, that happened, and it was done by 5 black men. I agree that whatever colour anyone is is totally irrelevant, and the perputrators of those vile acts should receive the stiffest penalties. About the 'nappy head' comment, I think it is also a very good thing that whoever said that was shamed. We have plenty of that on our news, too, and it is often made into a froth. I don't think racial slurs should be tolerated, let alone someone in an a position which is meant to be impartial, such a s a journalist, should be receiving a salary for making such comments.

I am so sorry that I accidentally duplicated it then. I did look first. I promise to do a much more thorough search before starting a discussion like this in the future.

You are so right on that one! As the song says, "It doesn't matter if you're black or white (or something to that effect)." Even if they are martians, they should hang!

I think it's very unbalanced the way the media treats news that has any sort of racial issue attached. Certain races are allowed to say whatever they want, and others can't say anything for fear of repercussions. In this country where we're supposed to have freedom of speech, and equality it seems we have little of those. I believe everyone should be treated equally regardless of race or ethnicity or financial status.

I take it you have never listened to the Michael Savage late night talk-radio show. This man repeatedly says the most vile things about blacks and other ethnicities all the while denying he is a racist.

No, I've never heard of him, but he sounds like a shock jock, those kind that make a name for themselves by getting everyone all worked up over racial, ethnic, or sexist issues. The best thing to do with these types is just ignore them, because that's all they want is publicity.

Yes runningman, the story has gotten quite a bit of coverage, contrary to what you might think. I heard it on a radio talk-show hosted by (who I think) is the most dangerous man in politics. The fact that he denies that he is a racist doesn't hold water. But, back on subject. Any hate crime, whether committed by white, black, or any other, is aboiminable. They should be punished to the full extent of the law. I would not wish what happened to these kids on my worst enemy. Having said this, I must point out that many blacks were lynched and murdered in all sorts of ways for decades and justice was not done. Yes, racism is truly a *itch!

I wish they wouldn't even bring up race. What they did was terrible but it wasn't because they were black. It was because they were mean. I don't know why the news people (supposedly intelligent people who know better) continue to do this.

I think I agree with what SNOPES has to say about it. Check it out at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/crime/newsom.asp They point out that the crime was covered by area media because it was a local crime, whereas the other events referred to involved either national media and/or nationally known celebrities. I don't think I could tolerate the barage of having every local atrocity on my evening news. It is hard enough to deal with the national ones and the ones in my city. I didn't hear about Channon Christian and see it as horrendous. I believe those arrested for the crime have to have SERIOUS consequences for their behavior.

Cruelty is cruelty, who ever done that is/ are not able to say themselves human being! But more important thing is how one can do that? And why? Why are we all not learning from history and war? Why are we not following just love and harmony? Perhaps still the seed sowing of hate and racism is not become rootless! So many saints, prophets, intelectuals, monks, humanitarians and good posaitive thinkers and people come and said about positive things, promoted harmony! People followed and accepted their sayings! But... Yes, but again the odd and bad things come up and people are lead by such persons and again the positive work has to face the condition of hate and violence! We can just pray and wish for the better tomorrow and better understanding will be there and human beings will grasp the real thing surely!

I think that any crime is terrible- I'm not going to even comment on racism. There are alot of hate crimes- These men deserve to be castrated- have their peni$ cut off and then be killed. But it isn't because they are black and the victims were white- It's because they committed 2 very horrific crimes! How terrible! And using a term "nappy headed ho's" was wrong too!

These men are scumbags and they should be locked up for life for what they did, but it has nothing to do with what race they are or their victims. They are all just sick individuals. The Media controls what we see and will get on the bandwagon over certain issues and if anything else comes along that will get greater publicity and money for them, they will quite happily forget the real issues that need reporting. I am sure there has been loads of things happening lately, but I am sure Paris Hilton has been getting all the main headline news at the moment, sells more papers I'm afraid. May be this is why I never buy a paper anymore, they are mostly full of crap.

GOSH those two people were human beings and how does it matter they were whites or not and the ones who did well whatever the colour of thier skin they are animals who deserve to be shot and then left to die slowly and painfully while they relive the horror they committed ....it just makes one wonder how low humans can sink! Has anyone EVER come across such madness from the animal world?...man is the only animal that commits crimes against his own kind and yet we are supposed to have a brain, heart and soul! and as for people making 'issues' of non issues like the comment 'nappy headed' well that happens all the time as well iam not saying its right but as humans we tend to miss the forrest while looking at the trees

I think that the perpetrators of this crime should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. But.... Yeah, you hear it and I hate to say it, but I will. If this were a case of black victims and white perpetrators, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson would be all over the media. I just question why race is an issue at all. The cops in the rodney king beating were white, but does that make it a racial incident. Why? i JUST DON'T GET IT. If the victim had been white, which is probable, the ruling would have been, an officer using deadly force; but from fear, not racism. I really looking ot know why. Because the victims were white, it is not racial. If the victims were black it would be racial. WHY?????

You have a substantial point here, you are onto something. Yes, a lot of times I see stories like this where the victims being white is kind of minimized, but you are so correct that a black victim often seems to get much more attention from the media and activitists. I agree with many that say this should not be based on color. "If you do the crime, you should do the time." "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." And not just doing the time, but the media should adequately cover both.

yes, and I don't think this crime was because of race. I personally don't think the Rodney King crime was racial either. OJ definately wasn't racial. We need to stop thinking about skin color and start thinking about the fact that a person or people were hurt. Period. And before you ask, I would like for this to apply to gay people as well.

The reason they are saying this got no press is that it was not racially motivated. Supposedly it was just a robbery turned bad. Like a robbery could be anything else. The whole think stinks...we have 2 young people who did nothing wrong other then being in the wrong place at the wrong time... Next we have 5 men, obviously evil people, regardless of race, who seem to be able to make this appear not as bad as it seemed. I don't care if it was racially motivated...we should listen to the bible..and eye for an eye- they should die the same way.

I have not heard of this news item at all, and it is a wonder it did not make headlines around the world. I suppose it all depends on what country it happened in, as to whether it would generate much publicity on the international arena. Regardless of that, if this story is actually true and this event did happen, then it is despicable act by some gutless people. That is regardless of their race, colour or creed of the offenders. I couldn't care less about any of those things, except it is about as low as people can get. They are animals and deserve to be treated no better than some mangy mongrel running loose in society. I would hope that these animals were treated no better than they treated their victims, that they suffer equally as badly as these innocent victims did. If you hear any more news on this, please post it here runningman and keep us updated.

Are you sure that this is true - I ave heard of very similar stories being distributed for years by racist and neo nazi groups wjo try to divide commuunities according to race and stir up hatred! I would take this information with a pinch of salt unless you can confirm it is true - even then I would be angry about the crime that had been commited regardless of colour!

That is very typical, and it shows you that whites are being discriminated against. We have fought for equal rights and equal opportunity so well that the issue is falling backwards and reversing itself. Go into a Welfare office and the white person that is ten times worse off will be turned down while the black or Hispanic that arrives in a limo gets red carpet treatment. I am all for equal rights, but lets not get carried away here.
