When I was little we always would use SPF 50. I am very fair and I burn, never tan at all. I have tried it so many times, people tell me about going slow, but it NEVER works, I always get red and blister. Therefore I never lay out in the sun for a long time. I prefer to put lots of sunscreen on. For a child, 45 or 50 waterproof will be good. If it is for a young child that may lick his/her hands then I think you should definitely buy the "child" kind, so I would say if your kid is under 8 years old and knows not to lick the sun screen, then it will be okay to just buy the one that says
"hypo-allergenic" which means it doesn't have dyes and such. I noticed that the child and baby versions costs a lot more, so that is why you are probably asking that.

Sorry I meant to say "over 8 years old"
If your child is under 3 years old I would buy the baby version.

Thanks Pablo!
I bought some baby kind and some regular kind. The baby is SPF 50 and the regular kind is SPF 30 and they are both waterproof, but yeah I think for my 2 year old and 6 month old I will definatly use the baby stuff

I usually use a water proof spf of at least 45 on my fair skinned children. On the ones that have the more olive colored skin like me, I drop it down to a 30.
I always make sure it is water proof because even if the kids aren't swimming, they sweat while playing. This way I am not always reapplying.
I like the colored lotion they have now, that way I make sure I get ever inch covered.

Hey I have seen that colored stuff, I should pick up some, plus the kids would think it was neat. I have some spray stuff but it isn't marketed for kids and it's only a 30, so not sure if I am going to use it or not. Good point about the water proof. I'll have to make sure I get some that is waterproof!

Last year I used the Coppertone waterbabies on my son. It has an spf of 50. This year, my mom bought him some Huggies Little Splashers spf 50 for when we are at her house. We've still been using the Coppertone baby one so far. But I will probably switch him to the kids kind when I need to get more. We will definitely be using a 45 or 50 spf, though. My son has really fair skin just like I do. I use at least 30 on myself, and usually higher.

I use a waterproof (most are if you buy for kids) and at least 40 SPF. And most of the lotions over 40 SPF are only found specifically for kids....

I use at least spf 30 on my kids - they are pretty fair skinned. I love the new Ultra Mist spray on stuff. . .especially at the beach. Just spray it on, you don't have to rub it in and it is water resistant. If you use it, just remember to have them cover their eyes when you are spraying it on.

I live in Texas, so my son wears sunscreen year-round. I put a sport sunblock on him; it's waterproof, sweatproof, and spf 30. He's a little darker than I am, but everyone can burn. My nephew doesn't wear any yet (he's only 4 and a half months), but when he reaches 6 months, he'll be wearing an spf 50 since he's so fair. They generally recommend waiting until 6 months to start applying a sunblock, especially a chemical block. To be extra safe, use a physical block instead (the one with aluminum I believe; it turns your skin bluish or purple if you're darker). I don't think there's a significant difference in adult and children's sunblocks. But I don't know for sure.
Blessed Be
