My poor husband!

Since my husband is leaving for 6 months starting on Saturday-I am cutting back. We will be moving to a bigger place while he is gone, and I don't really feel like moving too much as I am pregnant and will have 4 kids running around. So I started listing stuff on ebay and craigslist. My poor husband thinks he is coming home to an empty house, haha!!! My questions are these: When you move, to you take everything or try to get rid of alot? When getting rid of stuff, how do you do it? Garage sales, craigslist, ebay, donations?

If we can afford to buy new things I get rid of the old stuff!! My hubby is cross-training and will be gone for 6 months (starting in late October) and then we will be stationed somewhere else, we don't know where. So we will get rid of alot of stuff since me and the kids will be staying with my parents. Things that I really like I would keep, like dishes, beds whatever, but the little things I would get rid of. Like bathroom stuff, books, movies, stuff like that.

Wow lucky! my hubby wishes he could retrain! and move too! :) Well at least if you are staying at your parents you'll get BAH and not pay rent right?! :) I would love that!! Yeah stuff we like is staying. I'm just trying to downsize..lol we have too much

Yes, honestly I wish I could dump this place early. Our BAH is $1780 a mo. Could you imagine just having that as pocket change for 6 months?! I want it!! LOL but I need the house so I can make sure my kids can still go to school and we have somewhere to live in september..lol!!!! As long as you aren't in housing you should get the BAH! I hope it's good!!

SH**!!! Ours is only like $850 here!! My hubby is only a SRA though, he is fixing to be a Staff Sargent so that will raise it to $1000 I think...that can pay off a credit card quick!! He wants to pay off his truck and everything so we have absolutely no bills besides phones, internet & cable, just monthly things. He is a dreamer I think =)

What hubby doesn't know is you are just getting rid of stuff so you can buy new stuff while he is gone (wink, wink) lol I hate moving pregnant or not, it seems to be such a hassle. My sympathy to you when the time comes. I try to get rid of our junk throughout the year, usually I will sell the kids' clothes on ebay but sometimes I just don't want to put the work into creating a listing. When that happens I like to bag it up and donate it to either the Salvation Army, Goodwill or our local homeless shelter. If the toys are in good shape I like to take them to the homeless shelter. I love shopping at garage sales but it is too much of a headache to try and set on of my own up, and since I am off the beaten path there probably won't be enough traffic to make it worth my time. I have heard of craigslist but never really checked it out. Is it the same or better than ebay? Does it cost money to list with them?

Are you moving off base?? We were in for a surprise with all the bills when we moved off base!! They are way over the BAH my hubby gets every month, so we can't wait to move and get back on base where we won't have to worry about our electric bill being over $400 every month!!

Its free on craigslist! Its pretty good. I've sold almost everything already from listing on there, I am really impressed. You can add up to 4 pictures too. I like garage sales! I wish I wasn't so lazy *sigh*. I hate moving too. And we are only taking a couple of miles away. I still hate it!!

I usually have a big garage sale. We live on a main street and get lots of traffic.

I tend to take it all with me. You may be onto something with eBay or Craigs List. That's a good idea, thanks for suggesting it. I suppose I could stand to get rid of some of the stuff I've gathered, over the years.

Oh no—having a baby- taking care of 4 children- and moving all while your hubby is deployed- How lucky for you! I hope you have plenty of help! You guys better enjoy your time with your parents because it sounds like there won’t be much relaxation after. : ) Nope- I got rid of a bunch of stuff prior to the move- just like you- Why take it if you don’t need it or are getting new in the new place? We had a huge yard sale for 2 weekends prior to moving- How much fun it was- My daughter loved it! What didn’t sell, we gave away on the last couple of days prior to moving and then donated the rest at the Salvation Army-

Yeah, I am SO excited! NOT!!! I have no idea who is going to help me at this point! I emailed a moving company but I think that will be too pricey even though we are only talking about a couple of miles away. So far craigslist has done great. I have sold almost everything!

I have moved a few times in my life and we almost always took the things we had from our previous home into our new one, except for the time my mom, sister, and I had to move from our house to an apartment. We took as much stuff as we could and if I remember right (this was almost 20 years ago after all), my mom sold just a few things to our neighbors. I've been in my current home for over 11 years and if my family and I had to move we would probably list a few items on craigslist. Especially if we had to move into a smaller home, like an apartment. If we couldn't part with certain things, but they couldn't fit into our new home then I guess we'd have to put them in storage. :P

We don't keep a lot of extra stuff around anyway. If we were moving to a larger place I wouldn't get rid of things unless we truely didn't need them. Best wishes with everything. Moving is a really big job.

We do move out and we bring all our things and transfer it to our new house so that we can save also.We are really budget conscious thats why we save every cents of our money.

yeah it sucks, I hate moving, but you already know that, you've had to put up with my cranky butt. If I could, i'd get rid of all the big stuff, lol. Too bad that's not an option. Anyway it sucks that you have to move when I won't be here. It's poo, i have so much crap to do and so little time, at least i almost got all the fence down today!

It would totally depend on how far away I am moving and how much notice I have. I have moved two doors down and gotten rid of nothing. I have moved across the world and had eight months notice and had to get rid of nearly everything I owned. When I had to do that I had a month of garage sales, gave a lot of things to friends and family, and donated the rest to charity. I still had a bill of 4000 in shipping though and look back and wonder why the heck did I bring some of the things and not others. I think that is the good thing about moving, it can be a real de-clutterer.
