How do you keep your nails from cracking or breaking?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep your nails from cracking or breaking. I dont have any problem in growing them long but once they reach a certain length they break or crack. My husband loves it when I get manicures but lately we havent been able to afford it so my nails have suffered. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know.
