Another Accident!! Should I go to the ER???

I can always wind up hurting myself. Like 30 minutes ago I was walking to the kitchen and my brothers puppy had made a mess with the water on the floor. Well I did not see the water and of course I slipped and fell really hard!
In the process I heard a loud crack and pop which scared the crap out of me but my knee really hurts it is throbbing and aching! It hurts to walk on it and move it much.
My boyfriend told me to go to the emergency room but I dont want to sit there for like 8-10 hours just for a knee brace and crutches. I think if I ice it and stay off it as much as possible it will get better. I am sure I only tore a ligament in my knee not broke it.
What do you think? What would you do? I hate hospitals and I have no insurance either so I really dont want to go. :(
Suggestions please.........

I'd be like you and would try to look after it myself first, I have always been a big believer in self help. I am going to guess that by now either it is feeling better or you are still in ER having it looked at. I hope you are OK, let us know.

If anything is broken and it is not attended to you will have more serious problems later on and then it is really going to cost you. Insurance or not you need to have it looked at - sooner rather than later. I would suggest you have someone take you to the E.R. If you are in a lot of pain you will more than likely get it looked at pretty soon. My advice to you is go now.

Tearing your ligament is bad as well. Usually a pop like that indicates a tear, probably of the ACL, which cannot heal by itself and usually requires surgery, moreso than a broken leg would.
I wouldn't go to the ER since they won't do anything anyways. But I would get to your primary care physician ASAP, which is tough on Memorial Day weekend (if you're in the US). Oh, you don't have insurance... eeeek. Really, it could be a long term problem including physical therapy (after tearing my ACL i had to go to PT 3 times a week for 6 months).
Good luck, keep us posted.

Afraid you really should go...it could be dislocated or broken. My ex-hubby broke his left knee cap in 3 places just before we started dating. It hurt but not that bad so he finished work and drove his standard transmission car (think *clutch*) to my house before heading home for the night. The next morning his mom had to take him to the ER because his knee was swollen so badly that he couldn't bend it or get his normal pants on. So just because yours doesn't feel that bad doesn't mean it isn't broken.
I know it's hard when you don't have insurance but it will cost less to get it checked now than to wait and do more serious damage.

I feel like that once...went home & called for a doctor. He suggested a pain killer and then put ice on it. About 5 hours later I was crying in pain as the pain killer wore off. I called tha ambulance and it turned out I had brioken my knee. I was able to walk on it but with alot of pain...so much pain I wet myself. I had to have surgery to fix it. Do what your BF suggested.

I would at least have it checked out at least at a clinic. If you do have something seriously wrong like internal bleeding. You can develop other problems that could be averted with getting it looked at.I don't know about what to do about the money.I think there might be something to help you pay at the hospital. You might have to ask them.I know my sister was able to get medicaid. It might make it worse to wait or not find out at all.You can get some crutches at Wal-greens.

you definitely have to check it... sounds to me the injury is quite serious and you don't want to have a permanent damage on your knee which you will regret for the rest of your life because you didn't treat it early... your body is your asset and it is better to be safe than sorry... so please go to the ER and have it checked even though you hate it... as for insurance, your health is much more important than money... i am sorry to hear about your accident... please have it checked as soon as possible and update us on the result... take care...

well you need to put the ice on it right away, because it will swell and if you can call the emergency room and ask them if you need to be seen.

I would keep the ice on it for sure and if its not feeling alittle better by tonight then go to the hospital. It sounds like you might have tore something in there. If you dont have insurance they can bill you and just pay what you can afford each month. And I hope it feels better.

I'm like you...I hate going to the hospital and have no insurance. So unless I am bleeding profusly or in so much pain that I can't cope I won't go.
Common sense says to suggest you go to the Hospital all the same.
Personally if I had done the same thing I wouldn't go until I absolutely had to...but then I'm hard headed and stubborn lol.
Good luck!!

I've had some knee problems and operations so I feel for you. I have torn ligaments and had the knee pop out of place. It still occasionally as well and I just pop it back in and it's mostly okay.
What I would suggest (probably a little late now) is ice it, put it in a brace or an ace bandage. Definetly start taking asprin, or ibeprofin both for the pain and also to help combat the swelling. Later, use heat on it, and you can even alternate between heat and cold every 20 minutes or so. Make sure you elevate your leg also.
She how it is in a day or so and go to the doctor then if you still need to.

I think you should go get it checked. If you really do not want to go to the emergency room then maybe look into going to an after hours clinic. You can usually get in and out faster then if you were to go to the emergency room and they are cheaper to. Good Luck and I hope everything is ok. Oh and stay off that leg and keep it proped up untill you do get it looked at but the sooner the better you dont want to injure it anymore than it already is.

I think you should really have to be check up by the doctor in order to find out what happened to you. Or another way for you to lessen the pain on you knee is just sit down. put any bottle at the floor.. And then roll your feet on the bottle, roll it back and forth. Trust me, its very effective.

you have to have that check up. do not wait for the moment to come when it will be too late. it is better to know now what exactly has gone wrong and what would be the best way to deal with the whole thing. the earlier the better.
