Why are scabs so itchy?

Bandaid - A bandage used to cover wounds.

Some things about the human body don't make any sense at all. Scabs are supposed to help protect a wound while it heals. So if they are itchy then all we want to do is scratch and pick at them, and then it takes a lot longer to heal. It would make a lot more sense for scabs to not be itchy so they could do their job better. It takes a lot of restraint not to pick at an itchy scab. I know lots of times I will scratch and pick at scabs and I don't even realize I'm doing it until it starts to bleed again. I wonder if the only way to prevent picking at scabs is to keep them covered with a bandaid until they are healed.

The reason they itch, is that there's a lot of healing activity going on in the area. As you say, all it takes is some restraint not to pick, and to be aware of what you're scratching when your hand strays to the scabby area :-) There are ointments you can apply to the area to relieve the itching - a band-aid isn't great, as it will make the area softer, and the scab may fall off prematurely. The body works in the most efficient way possible, so it's not concerned with how much we want to scratch. There are lots of tingling nerve-endings on the skin, especially when new skin is emerging - that's just life and nature I'm afraid! It's not that hard to not scratch, with a bit of willpower!

I put neosporin on mine and then it's kind of slimey/sticky and I don't want to pick. But I know what you mean. It's so hard not to pick the scabs.

I know what you mean. It is sooo annoying. Sometimes i will keep a bandaid on them, but it doesnt stop the itching. There should be a wonder cream that heals them straight away. Best wishes to you, kythe

I think scabs are like a cast on your arm. The skin under your scab is dry and gets itchy just like your skin under you cast gets dry and itchy. I am just speculating here but that is what came to my mind just now. I do not get many scabs nowadays but when I was a kid I had plenty. My younger sister used to pick at her scabs and eat them! Gross! but she was little then. I do not believe she does that any more. Sorry sis, your secret is out. But that is what brothers are for. :) lol!
